Is It Safe to Buy Crypto Hardware Wallets from Amazon?

So they have various software methods of validating.

And they have tamper proof packaging.

I've still heard many a crypto bro recommend to only purchase directly from the manufacturer though.

I just went through the hassle, inconvenience and added expense of buying a trezor from trezor.io instead of Amazon.com.au, only to have the envelope arrive with a hand sized tear that was half taped back together. However the trezor box was still shrink-wrapped and has intact holographic stickers.
So I guess it is OK?

But what was the point of spending more?!

If you buy from the manufacturer's Amazon store, would Amazon ever send one from another seller?

Amazon has employees who could tamper, but seeing as they take orders into the toilet to try to keep up with the pace Amazon demands, they might not have time to tamper?!

I bought directly from amazon, had no issues. Just look for the one that had most review and says the seller as the same as manufacture. You shouldn't have any issues.

Generate and reset the setup seed phrase a few times.
Won't 100% guarantee it's not compromised, but from most 'fake' or hacked ones I've seen reports of its due to either coming supplied with the seed phrase ( and people not seeing how clearly insecure that is), or it generates the same predefined 'known' seed phrase (or set of, but that set could be large making identifying this unlikely) for it's wallet address.

Either way, it's crypto…got to just workout what risks you're happy with :)

      Yeah spot on.
Trezor says it is fine to get from Amazon.

It is also fine to get Ledger from Amazon.

Set it up the first time to generate the seed phrase. Enter the wrong PIN code 3 times and the device will reset.
Set it up again to get new seed phrase.
The Ledger Live app also checks that the connected Ledger device is authentic.

Nothing is 100%, but I think it is as safe as you can get.

    • This method wouldn't work if it has been tampered with, however that's very rare.

All successful "hacks" of hardware wallets requires physical access to the wallet, so you should be pretty safe.
