NBA League Pass 50% off: Standard A$77.49, Premium A$104.99 Per Season @ NBA

840

I was so salty that they made NBA league pass VPN virtually impossible to sign up to this year. So I used a few email burners and kept signing up for a free week then cancelling, as I was waiting for this. Now I will pay them their 75 bucks for the remainder of the season.

I’m giving you an upvote for the description.

I'll be doing this next year as I received the email on Monday that for 24/25, my subscription will align with my viewing country.

    • +1

Yep the party is over. I think next best thing is to get organised early and get on a family share arrangement with other ozbargainers.

      • +5

Party may not be over. I would first try a new foreign league pass account next year.

        • Good idea, but you then won't have the benefit of using your stored credit card. That would mean then that you would need to purchase an overseas debit card wouldn't it?

    • +1

What country are you subscribed through? I have a Sth Africa sub and am yet to receive that email.

      • I'll have to check. Think it was Argentina.

        • I had mine through Argentina but completely forgot that my stored credit card expired last year and so it lapsed.

      • +1

I have sth africa too and got the email yesterday

      • +1

I have a South Africa sun and got the email yesterday :(

        • +1

I have a South African son and got an email yesterday

    • +1

Don't think i got that email.
Or maybe I did and ignored it because it was in Turkish

    • This will just push people to torrents.

      • Will it? I don't watch sport unless it is live other than sports centre or highlights.

    • Got the email as well but will try the VPN thing again for 24/25 as not sure I watch enough games once the AFL starts to warrant Aussie prices for access.

    • Hmmm, as i subscribe in Mexico perhaps that is what one of the emails i recieve in spanish and delete says.

Be warned that the streaming quality is AWFUL. I was trying to watch Knicks Raptors yesterday and it was unwatchable.

    • +6

That could just be a you thing?
Wife and I watch one game a day typically and have had no issues at all this season.

      • +1

Yep agree. No issues at all for me and never have had in 15+ years of streaming the games.

        Upgrade your internet maybe?

        • What does that even mean? What internet connection is not suitable for streaming 1080p or under video?

          • @ScruffTheJanitor: Slow ones. HTH

            • +1

@mickeyjuiceman: "If you have an internet connection speed of 3 Mbps or higher and your computer meets the requirements below, you will be able to enjoy the NBA.com at its highest video quality. HTH.

What internet services are available that have max speeds lower than 3 Mbps?

        • -1

BS - there have been known issues that have affected every league pass user. Opening day 2017 was one.

          • @Pootie Tang: ANY app or service has issues like that once in a while. The comment above says 'be warned that the streaming quality is AWFUL' which implies its just like that normally when its absolutely not.

I've had almost no issues in 15+ years streaming NBA games and the streaming quality is far better than other apps we regularly use

            • @jay889344: I have no problems with the stream.

The interface and when games cut out are unacceptable.

The quality (res) has increased in the last year but kayo is a better streaming product from an interface, pick up where you left off and loading pov and I don't like saying that.

Billion dollar company who has ties to Steve Ballmer whose company developed the app and can't even get a basic stream to work with some level of continuity.

              What platform do you use?

              • @Pootie Tang: You lost me when you said Kayo was better. Their back end streaming partner is HORRIBLE. Streammotion or whatever.

Stream just stops on both Kayo and Binge. NBA app is way better. I've not lost the stream in years on NBA app and I am streaming games nearly all day everyday.

                • @jay889344: What platform?

                  • @Pootie Tang: Do you mean what device am I streaming on?

If so, Google TVs with NBA app

                • @jay889344: I said the interface was better, not the streaming.

Excellent you have had no problems. A Google search will show plenty of results to others not as lucky as you.

Still garbage app from a Multibillion $ company.

Was better before Microsoft took over.

                  Cheers

                  • @Pootie Tang: Disagree - and referring to Google searches or people whining online means nothing as people won't go on to say 'this service or product is good' but they'll always go on to complain.

Furthermore, ANY app is going to have issues and I reckon half the people whinging - its user influenced in some part.

Its likely the vast, vast majority of people using the NBA app don't have these issues. Don't let people whining on an online forum fool you into thinkin thats the experience of most others. Its not

                    Cheers!

                  • @Pootie Tang: I'll leave it at this - for most people I know with the NBA app (none of whom have streaming issues), they're using newish devices (recent model Smart TVs, Apple TVs, Google TVs etc) and 100Mbp + NBN speed plans. None of them have had issues.

Now to the people whinging online - is it possible they're using old devices with outdated Apps, outdated OS, slow internet connections or weak signal in terms of distance from their router to their streaming location? Absolutely. So in that case, would be user issue, not the App

    • +3

      Get better internet

    • Yeah I’ve never had an issue always perfect via my wifi at home on tv

    • +3

I have good days and bad days with it. I am on a fast internet plan and don't struggle with any other streaming services so I expect much of the issue is the app itself.

    • +2

People are downvoting you, but you're not wrong. It CAN be awful, its definitely not awful all the time (most the time its good for me) but some games are horrendous. Watching one of the semi finals for the in season tournament couldn't even get over 240p without it stuttering.

    • +2

I also sometimes find Raps games unwatchable but that's more to do with the lack of creation in the half-court than any particular app

    • Quality is always good but about 20% of the time the sound is faaarked. court sound at 100% and commentators at about 60%.

    • +1

I recently learned that the 1080p stream was only available to me on Safari or Edge. Chrome and Firefox cap out at 720 for some reason, you can't even select the 1080 option. On Edge it's selectable and works, and on my M2 Mac Safari doesn't let you select a quality but auto DOES stream at 1080. Also as a Knicks fan I can confirm Knicks games suck to watch regardless of stream quality.

      • Last few years have been the best we've played in ten years. Hop of the bandwagon please.

    • I have problems through Chromecast. I reduced the refresh rate (after doing some Googling) and it's solved most of them.

It's only the NBA app that I have issues with. Youtube, Disney, etc are fine.

  • +8

I still pay in pesos. This is my third year being Mexican. Prior I was Turkish. They have yet to tell me that I have to align to my viewing country. It may change in the future though. To be honest, the app is so woeful that the 10 minute YouTube highlights better to watch. Such a shame as I love having games on in the background while I am doing stuff. I watch the first, do stuff for the second and third, then back for the fourth.

    • +1

This is my second year as an Argentinian and thankfully no emails yet.

The app is awful, first few months every time it went to ad break "a general error has occurred" was awful…

    • I have been on the Mexican price for 6/7 years, updated the CC prior to the season starting as the card on file had expired and haven't received any email yet. Don't think I'll renew if I'm charged the stupid local prices. Pretty much watch the games the same way as background until the 4th but airplay to a TV and hardly have any issue.

  • Woah Ill have to check my emails but I have not saw the same come through yet. Great price for a legal version though, paid close to the $100 mark with the price increase this year..

  • +4

At the start of the season I signed up with VPN via India and paid around 35 AUD. I have received an email stating that they can see I’m in Australia and will be moving my billing over at the start of next season.

It’s a buggy mess and I refuse to pay full price for it

    • Same thing here, I cancelled it straight away as there's enough games on Kayo anyway.

  • +1

Tempting, but I don't know if I watch enough games these days to justify purchasing LP even at that price point.

    • Troll(notbender)

      • -1

We will bend you next year, too. But you already now are bent troll good luck!

  • +5

Damn, got the repricing email too. This ends a 6-7 year run of the VPN trick for me 😞. Hard to accept these BS Aussie prices when I was paying $36 ish from Turkey.

(Side note I agree the apps suck on all platforms. At the start of the season the default stream was the in-studio one so it would show highlights and talking points during the breaks. I don't care for any of that shit, GIVE ME THAT DOG THAT DUNKS THE PLUSH BALL IN A TINY HOOP)

    • +2

      Christian and Scooby! Quality entertainment!

    • +2

I keep being set to Spanish as the preferred language no matter how many times I change it back to the main stream and yes agree 100%, the entertainment is half of the fun and gives you a greater feeling that you are at the game.

      • This is true.. really does improve the experience.

    • +2

Agree, I want to watch what is happening inside the stadiums. Dancers, entertainments, half court shots, kiss cams, crowd dancing etc

  • With the Argentina price hike it will actually be cheaper for me to sub to Australia with this deal.

  • I had the account I used last season with a Turkish VPN auto-renew and it did for like $19 or something insanely cheap. Been able to use it no problem. Seems like others didn't have that happen though?

  • Got it for 35 aud. Premium. No problems with payment its my 3rd year. No blackscreen.

  • I'm with Superloop with the highest possible HFC speed in my are and games still buffer. It sux
I have a blue cable going to one new tv and also have an older tv I use Chromecast on
Both buffer every game I watch.
Can anything be done about it? I'm in Adelaide

    • Try reducing the refresh rate. I have problems with the NBA app on Chromecast an ancient TV and a good Internet connection, and after some research reduced the refresh rate on my Chromecast. It seems to have largely solved the issue.

      • Thanks but how do I do that. What do I do with the new Sony tv that im not using chromecast with as it has the nba app.
Watching it now picture goes in and out of poor quality and buffers at times.
Can the app settings be changed?
        Thankyou for the reply

    • That's very likely the Chromecast. I used to have that issue last season. Now running it through my PS5 it's flawless.

      • So you think that the app on the tv is causing the issues. I can't change any settings either.

        • The NBA Android TV app has been garbage for a few seasons now. I've resorted to plugging my laptop into the TV via HDMI.

          • @j4ck: Thanks I thought you might say that.

I have same issues via Chromecast to an older tv do you know much about those? Mine isn't an Ultra

            • @rodpolky: It'll be the same issue unfortunately. I never found a fix and have to use the PS5.

              • @Xianese: Ok thanks. So you just download the nba app on the ps5?

I don't own a ps5 might be a good excuse to buy one

  • Following. Currently subscribed vis Canada

  • Without a VPN, this is the best deal?

Or is this a bad deal because we're 1/3 the way through the season?

    • Better deal than what was offered at beginning of season. You're getting 2/3 of season for half price.

NBA aren't offering anything better. Best thing is to join a family league pass premium with other people and split the initial cost three ways, which would be 50 bucks for whole season and better than this deal.

Like Netflix though, they will probably start cracking down on that next.

  • Thanks for this op. an xmas present sorted.

  • How does this compare to Kayo?

    • Has every game not just espn games

  • I have a subscription through Argentina as well but have been struggling to watch games this season as all I get is a black screen with the sound on. Does anyone else have this problem? I've tried Firefox, Chrome and Safari and it's always the same issue.

    • Try Edge - the new streaming system is MS something something

      • No dice. I don't think this is browser related. Do you know if I need to "be in Argentina" to watch if my account is from there?

  • Kayo is OK but VERY limited games.

I just go to the free streams. Or if you have a sportsbet account it shows the game too.

    • Sportsbet has more games than Kayo?

      • Sportsbet is every game. You need to have a balance of > $0.00

  • I'm keen to join if anyone has a spare spot ☝️. Please PM.

  • Can two people watch at once?

  • +1

That's not a bad deal considering how expensive league pass was a few years ago.

  • Do we know is this price be recurring each year?

    • they do discount each year at a certain time part way through the season. Typically slightly later than this from my recollection

    • +1

It used to be half price during black friday sales, like OP I was also waiting on this.

  • +3

Great deal if you're an avid nba watcher. Much better than those streaming sites, you know what I'm talking about. I got the premium last month thinking they won't give a 50% discount this year. Patience is a virtue.

  • alternatively, sign up to sportsbet have atleast $5 in account and can watch every nba game live

  • +2

They are having issues streaming via apple tv this year
I have had leauge pass for 10 years no issues but this year blury at times via apple tv. Have had to watch on ipad at times. They are not doing anything about it either :-(

  • +2

been trying to renew my Argentinian one all day, this explains why it wouldn't work. Will cop the $77 this year..

  • What does commercial free mean for League Pass Premium? Does the standard edition add commercials into it extra, or does it imply that the NBA’s mandated TV timeouts just show the court etc. instead?

    • +1

Adds at the start of each stream - or if you watch the playlist of recaps or highlights, 30sec ad between each 1-2min game recaps

      • Cheers mate!

  • or you can watch live on TAB app/website for free. Don't need any money in your account. Just an alternative.

  • +1

I like like your username and profile pic. :)

    • +1

      Thanks mate!

I drew inspiration for the username from the hit song "we can make sandwiches", and the picture is graffiti art I found in a back alley way whilst holidaying in Melbourne.

Truth be told, I was the subject of Costanza's jokes when my wife bought us both tickets to his stand up comedy show in Wollongong. She got us front row tickets and he used us a lot in his jokes! Serenity now!

  • +1

My league pass seems glitched. I subscribed 2 seasons ago, cancelled it before renewal last year but I can still watch games since then.
