Free EV Charging but Required Interaction

Close to me house there is a free EV charging station, but you need to speak the staff to get a card to activate. Would you use it frequently to get free charging?

Obviously I do but the feeling of asking the same person for the card put me off.

Edited: forgot to add you need to leave your licence with them when you use the card. Only need the card to active and the staff seem to be easy.

    Free is free.

What is the card? Can you ask if they offer anything more long term like a weekly or monthly card?

  • +2

Yes, but don't just ask for the card. Say "hello" and be friendly, if they seem receptive have a brief chat - ask them how they are, or complain about the weather.

  • If you're abiding by the terms and conditions, what's the problem? Is there anything more to this?

  • You might be going too frequently if the staff hand you the card as you walk in.

What’s the business? Is there an expectation of you to enjoy free charging but buy a coffee/meal etc?

    • It’s a community centre, nothing is being asked. I believed it started as free charging for all but something has triggered this to be activated few months ago. That’s what I got from Plugshare.

I think you're confusing introversion with social anxiety. I'm an introvert but I would have no problem interacting with staff to ask about the free charging.

If the product is free, you are the product.

I dont know what your problem is. Seriously.

    • O.P.'s won't be eligible for OzBargain Premium membership with that sort of hesitance.

  • you need to leave your licence with them

    I think that is illegal.

    • I think that is illegal.

The only sense I can find - repeat, that I can find - in which that seems to be the case is if you are in a state the requires you to carry your licence when you drive, so your not having it with you if you did would be the offence. If there is some other rule that would make handing over your licence to someone in return for borrowing something, I'd like to hear about it.

My post his higher than yours, so it takes precedence.

  • These "Free Chargers" are usually paid for and installed on their property by a business and are meant to be used by their customers and patrons while they are using the primary service of that business may it be a hotel, super market or a sports club. I believe the cards are used as a deterrent so the freeloaders in the neighbourhood cannot hog up the charger by using it as their personal EV charging point

    • It's a community centre.
I would assume that therefore is owned by the council.
So if you're part of that council I would say go ahead and use it.
If it was a private business, that might be a different matter.

You wouldn't be describing the OP would you?

If you've got a digital drivers licence, do you have to hand over your phone?

  • +1

Can't leave my license with them as it's on my phone.

And sound weird that you can just it, but it may be a way for them to keep a track of who gets to use it. Maybe checking that you reside in the council area? Or that it isn't your 4th visit in 5 days?

Have you tried just using any NFC card to activate it? I know there are some on PlugShare that say that any card activated them.

    • That’s a very good idea LOL. I will try it.

      • Or get a cheap card reader from eBay and clone it.

      • You wouldn’t feel more awkward causing a scene if the community centre people came out and confronted you fro not checking in with them first?
They are giving you free charging, why try to avoid their simple rule?
