Coles Online Discount Generosity

Just looking at my recent Coles invoices, I am impressed with their "generosity" in pursuit of online sales.

A food order had $20 off with online code plus $20 FB points, so $40 off $125 spend.

Booze order was better. Initial total $210, most of that discounted already, specials or multibuy. That is the price I would have paid cash, in-store without Flybuys loyalty card.
Then 10% off flybuy offer, 20% off selected online liquor (applied to most of it), and $37 worth of flybuys points credited which will come off my next grocery shop. As good as cash to me. Net cost $114, 54%.
Apply that to the $55 litre of spirits, net cost $30. But Coles paid $37 spirits excise on that, plus GST! Beer was similarly at a loss.

I hear a lot of whinging about Colesworth prices lately, so I just want to say a big thanks to them for subsidising my drinking this Christmas! Sure beats a water bottle :-)
And keep an eye on those multiple loyalty card accounts folks.

Beer / alcohol —-> cant comment on these items that cause issues in society

Markups are not that big, except on a few items like veggies with high levels of wastage and handling cost. Even the 'half price' specials do not come from the supermarket margin, but from the supplier. Gross margins are around 25%, so I assume that means a 33% average markup?

They are willing to lose money on online sales at the moment.

Am wondering if I got lucky, or this is common, and how to keep the offers coming.

  • $37 worth of flybuys points credited

How'd you get 7,400 points from this one shop? You sure you know how much the points are worth? 1,000 = $5, 2,000 = $10 etc.

The usual 20% offer, in this case 5200 points for $130 spend, plus another FB offer 2000 for $190 spend, plus the basic 1/$. So four promos stacked on one purchase.

      • Ahh, well done then, you had some good offers indeed, and stacked nicely.
