This is a fantastic real-time tactics (RTT) game by Tindalos Interactive, I highly recommend it — a real love-letter to the Aliens and United States Colonial Marines universe. I own both the Steam and PS5 versions and have over a hundred hours combined across both platforms.

A really solid sneaky-stealthy tactics game punctuated by occasional moments of high stress when you have to face down an onslaught of xenos. Note that the game mechanics are built around stealth and stress, so you generally want to avoid combat for the most part whenever possible, unless you want to make the game harder and more challenging. When you get detected by xenos, your stress rises and if your marines get stressed enough they start developing various panic debuffs. Xenos will infinitely respawn and you don't get any XP at all for killing regular xenos — you only get XP for surviving onslaughts and for killing higher-tier xenos. Your goal is to perform various tasks and reach mission objectives while avoiding or battling xenos whenever they appear.

If you blunder your way through combat engagements, the game can get brutally difficult, especially in the early stages of the game, so that's why I recommend playing stealthily for the most part until you have mastered the game mechanics. By the late game your marines will have levelled up enough that you should be able to handle most combat scenarios without trouble.

Be warned that the game can still be buggy, though I personally never encountered any of the game-breaking bugs that others have even in the early days before the numerous patches that have come out since. This is very much a AA game, not a AAA game, so it's best to keep that in mind when delving in. Do expect to see minor glitches now and then which are not game-breaking but might be annoying.

For experienced gamers who like a challenge, I recommend Hard difficulty. The game has a steep learning curve in the beginning, but after your marines level up and gain abilities and better weapons the game becomes far more manageable. I found Medium difficulty got too easy by the late game.

    • Aliens: Fireteam Elite was good, wasn't great. This game should be much better?

      • Really? It was good for the first 20 minutes and the was just repetitive, same waves, just different areas. I was so excited getting it, bored not long after

        • Good with friends not great.

      • I played Aliens: Fireteam Elite for about an hour solo but couldn't get into it. It's a completely different game genre though, so you can't compare them. I imagine FE is much more enjoyable when playing co-op, which I didn't do. There certainly is a dedicated community for it.
