One of the best games of all time. The only thing that stops it from being the best game of all time, for me, is the horrendously sluggish character movements. Simply turning around feels like doing a U-turn in truck.

    • +7

Immersion and just another great Rockstar detail, if you were Arthur it wouldn't be easy turning around ;)

      • +6

I know that's the idea behind it, but the frustration that this sort of movement causes can easily break flow and undermine immersion itself.

        • +1

Honestly I was joking I didn't know that it was intentional lol. I don't mind the movement it's fairly similar in GTA and has a different feel to games although it can feel unresponsive at times

    • You reckon? Maybe I need to check it out

      • +5

You do. It’s amazing - a bit slow to start but well worth it.

As for the character movements, I liked them as it felt natural.

      • +2

Do it, amazing story, beautiful world with so much to do and Arthur is one of the greatest characters ever imo

    • +1

It sums up the game relatively well. Polish at the expense of gameplay. Best example of it is that they turn on snap auto aim by default, it’s that sluggish

    • "Simply turning around feels like doing a U-turn in truck."

      haven't played Red dead.

but in Grand Theft Auto IV pretty sure it was the same. if you tried to turn around on the spot it's super slow. but if you walked forward first then turn, it's much quicker. and if you walked forward then run first then turn around it's quicker again.

    • +2

It fits the era in which the game is set. Life was slower back then. Arthur isn’t Sonic the Hedgehog. He moves with confidence and punches hard.

    • -3

If it was the best game of all time i wouldn't have put it down before the intro finished.

      Read dead 1 was better.

      • +3

Sounds like you didn't give it much of a chance

      • Agreed, Red Dead Revolver was better

    • Witcher 3's movements is way worse I reckon

  • Love the game but I'm too easily sidetracked. And the law seems to follow me everywhere.
Is there a setting for the map to only the display the main story quest?

    • +1

Don't think so, they are marked as yellow on the map, but I feel all the side quests and random occurrences breaks up the monotony of running from one main mission to another.

And the law seems to follow me everywhere.

      You probably have a bounty

  • +1

I have a hard time with this game. Undoubtedly great, but I prefer to play story games on the couch with the console. But console versions run at 30fps even on next gen. Never finished it :(

    • Nvidia shield will fix that

    • you dont know what your missing, i finished it twice 2 months after it came out, i think its worth a play again i forgot most of it now so it will feel like a new game

    • +2

have you tried steamlink (available as an app on smart tv now) or AMD Link (available on FireTV at least?)

  • Also can buy 3 Hitman games in World of Assassination for $27

    • This one's on GamePass though - So, if you just want to play through it and move on, then that might be cheaper

  • Thanks OP - was waiting for <$20, might be a long wait for anything substantially lower than this

    • +2

Rockstar games take a long time to reach 75% off, and I have never seen one bundled, even oldies like Manhunt, Vice City and The Bully. Their games have very high production values, but I am not a fan of their DRM and requiring another software launcher for another publisher.

  • One of the GOATs.
    Arthur, what a character
Amazing story and the change of pace from most other games 👌🏻

  • +6

I've tried playing this game like 4 times and stopped an hour or so in each time.

Too much short form media and online gaming molded my brain into needing dopamine hits every few seconds or I lose interest :(

    • +4

That’s sad. Push past that first hour and you’ll be rewarded. The Wild West is a nice place to escape to for a while.

  • Isn't there a remastered version in the works?

    • +3

The game was only released 2018, why would it need a remaster?

      You're probably thinking of RDR1.

      • TLOU2 came out in 2020 and it’s already getting a remaster for next gen so it’s a fair question

      • +1

        Could be

    • +1

I don’t see why this would be necessary. Perhaps they could ship a version for the newer consoles that runs at 60 fps. The graphics as such do not need an upgrade.

      • There is speculation that Rockstar could try to milk PS5 and Series S|X owners with a "remastered" version that supports fast loading (SSD) and 60fps on consoles.

  • +1

You mean Epic won't be giving it away for Christmas :)?

  • Any chance of this being a freebie? GTAV was but they still get online revenue out of those free players

    • +8

      High chance coz I bought

      • he bought??

  • Was sitting on fence with the sale on steam, but bought this instead, thank you!

  • Hmm this or star trek: resurgence. Difficult call, I have a limited budget for the moment.

Of course either of these might be free for their Christmas promotion, you just don't know…

  • +2

the fitgirl version is free :)

    • Dodi 10x better

      • can you explain how so? does it unpack faster?

        • +1

Just my experience honestly - better download speeds and installation times

          • @Securityclearance: They both use the exact same tools to compress the files.

One of the two compresses more than the other so obviously they unpack faster.

  • I can't help be a little suspicious that this is at the ALT just before their Christmas giveaways! Will HODL for a bit longer.

    • do u think this will get cheaper?
ill have grandkids before this game gets any cheaper than this i think, just of think of GTA5 as a comparison!

      • GTAV? The game that famously was given away for free on Epic and almost broke the internet? Poor example.

        • lol oops yea forgot about that! my bad!

Maybe Call of Duty is a better example?

          • @amisty79: That’s definitely a fair call.

And I actually agree that it’s unlikely to get cheaper, however I wouldn’t absolutely rule out it being a giveaway given Rockstar will be trying to build hype before GTA6 (and as above GTA5 was a giveaway).

    • +5

      Lmao man it’s 2023

      • In the Chinese zodiac, 2023 is the year of the pander!

    • +3

Upset that games reflect reality, sad. Trans people existed in the time Red dead redemption is placed just like they do now and just like they have for all human history. Get over it

  • If I'd bought this when it came out then got told id have to buy a new operating system 5 years later, I'd be maybe looking for a refund..

    • Microsoft allows free upgrade from Windows 7, 8 to Windows 10 and 11. Microsoft no longer provides security patches for Windows 7 or 8 so it might be better to upgrade to Windows 11 or 10.

      • I'm on windows 10 still, its just… I dunno, if you bought a car that was otherwise working just fine and the manufacturer suddenly said, "oh, you need a new engine. Old engine won't work anymore."

        • +1

Software is not the same as hardware. Rockstar is not enforcing customers must have Intel 7th gen or later CPU (or AMD equivalent).

  • -1

Very nice! shame it's epic games and not Steam though :(. Also bummer about no Windows 7 support. Seems to be happening to a couple games of mine now :/.

    • +3

What's wrong with it being on Epic Games

      • +3

Steam is a better platform. Remote play, forums etc…

And I believe that Epic is deliberately trying to make it as hard as possible to add your Epic games to Steam. If I was much wealthier, I'd only buy from Steam.

Suing Apple and Google did earn them a lot of good will from me though, even though I have no delusions of it being some sort of act of philanthropy.

        • +3

I thought you guys were going to tell me something that directly negatively affected RDR2 gameplay or corrupted my save files or something actually important.

I don't particularly give a shit about taking sides between two huge corporations suing each other

      • 99% of my games are on Steam, so much prefer to keep them in one place.

  • Why is this considered the "best version"? Is it because PC graphics can be better if you've got the high spec PC to deliver it or is there some feature difference between platforms? Thanks

    • +4

It is considered the best version because:

      • Console versions were developed for XBox One S|X and PS4 (Pro) and currently, even when playing on Series X or PS5, it is limited to dynamic 4K/30 fps and not able to take full advantage of fast / quick SSD load.
      • High end PC GPUs can play this game at a better resolution and frame rate.
      • Ability to use mods, more cheats (single player) and trainer apps.
  • very good price for the very best game imo.. i have it on steam already since launch or would've picked this up on epic

  • +1

    Ultimate edition worth it?

    • To summarize my research on this question (where I focused only on singleplayer, YMMV if you want online stuff): most responses said no. Limited additional gameplay content is included in ultimate/special vs just the base version.

      • Thanks

  • If same deal was on steam, would cop

    • How is having it on Steam better for you?

  • Is Epic doing a "daily give away" this year? I saw it mentioned recently but nothing on the site apart from the usual weekly that I can see (Destiny 2).

  • preferred the story in the original RDR. John Marston just a classic. thought they should have made use of the city in RDR2 for more missions seeing it was such an epic creation though. might have to play it again to reassess..

  • +1

I never understood the huge praise for this game. I love gta 5, ac odyssey/origins, far cry to name a few but I found rdr2 slow and clunky.

    • Most people enjoy the story, immersive experience and attention to detail. However, it does have pacing issue and some of those being realistic doesn't translate to fun. Yes, life is hard back then, but some quality of life improvement to make the game a bit more fun to play would be nice. The fast travel is more restrictive then RDR1 and that slows the game flow. While the control and gun play did improve, they still feel clunky.

While I rate RDR2 highly, I didn't enjoy chapter 5 and there are also bits in chapter 3 and 4 which I just quickly rushed through to get to chapter 6.

  • the greatest game of all time that's not a cyberpunk rpg until rockstar north flexes again with gta 6.

Rockstar North and San Diego unmatched in quality

  • +1

Didn’t like this game, wouldn’t pay more than $3 for it. Agree with mike slow and boring

  • Hate that rockstar never added story expansion dlc. So much of the world ripe for more stories

  • Thanks. For $20 I'll give it a go.

  • I found the game a little bloated… goes on too long, a few too many details that don't really add anything but clutter (eg cleaning guns etc).

But you can't argue with the production values - it is exceptionally well made. I still load it up every now and again just to wander around and look at that world for half an hour.

  • one of my favourites i still play the online version every day

  • I found shooting on this game hard on playstation I wonder if PC would be easier.
