SIA Business Class Upgrade from SIN to BOM

Hey guys… Need some help here, to make it easy Ill try and be as organised as possible.

Background:
*I am travelling with my Wife and Child (3 years old)
*The kid can be good or a challenge, if she is good… she is a FREAKING Angel! If not it can be quite overwhelming.
*We are Flying from BNE - SIN - BOM. BNE to SIN 8 hour flight and then SIN to BOM is a 5.5 hr flight. The flight from BNE to SIN is overnight
*We have a 2.5 hour stop over in SIN and then jump on the 5.5 hour flight.
*My Wife and I are Velocity Plat and Gold Members so we get Priority Boarding and Lounge Access.

Question
We just got offered an upgrade for all 3 of us to Business class either for AUD $3k or 290k KrisFlyer miles, I would need to transfer miles from my Velocity to Krisflyer, which would basically mean I lose 95% of my points.

Do you think its worth it?

I am a bit conflicted… on one hand I am thinking 5.5 hours is nothing, its BNE-PER… however, with a 2 hour stopover and having a child that has potentially slept the whole night it wouldnt be bad to have business class….

PLEASE HELPPPPPPPP :)

  • I don't think your 3 year old cares how much leg room you have or how good your food is…..

Do what works best for you.

    • agree with this.

      • hahaha not worried about the leg room… just more space for her to jump around and move around in the seated area… we'll have activity books but she can be quite active at that time of the morning… We would keep her confirmed to the seat area so she doesnt annoy other people, but I could see her potentially kicking the seat in front of her and we'll try to stop her but we can only pay so much attention…

I wouldn’t for that flight, it’s not that long. Save them for when you have to do a longer flight

    • Yeah… I am of that thought as well, what I am conflicted about is the kid hahaha it might just make life easier… but taken your vote on board :) thanks!

As someone who has travelled in the pointy end with his kids on points , i would say its absolutely not worth it . Kids don't really use that amount of leg space and that nice food and service is a waste on them. Keep the points and use them for a better purpose.

    • hahaha fair point, vote taken!

  • AUD$3k in total, or per person? If in total, it's a steal for 3 pax. I would absolutely avoid redeeming 290k krisflyer miles to upgrade.

But I'm a little confused that you mentioned BNE to PER (when your route is BNE-SIN-BOM). Where is the BNE to PER part?

AUD $3k in total, ~AUD $1k Per Person from SIN-BOM

The BNE to PER was a comparison for the flight time… so SIN-BOM is 5.5 hours which is pretty much the same as BNE to PER

      • Got it. Again, $3k for 3 people to fly business from SIN-BOM is a steal. My reasons are:

        • You've just had a red eye flight from BNE-SIN. Even if you manage to have a decent sleep (unlikely), plus 2 hours in the lounge to refresh, you will still feel tired/agitated one way or another. That would make another 5.5 hour flight feel much longer than doing it as a standalone flight.
        • The SQ business class cabin crew are pretty good at attending to your kid as there are much fewer passengers in biz. That could give you/your wife some space and time off to relax and enjoy business class.
        • You will arrive in BOM way more fresh and rested than you will be in economy. That will give you a good start to your holiday.

It's your choice to make, and $3k is not insignificant money. However, I think it's well worth it in this scenario.

        • Thanks for that… Completely agree!

  • Nah not worth it imho

I reckon it's money always better spent on the ground. Go for a longer transit in SIN and stay at the airside hotel or the Crowne Plaza. Spend the rest on hotels and dining.

  • Thanks for your vote :)

So having done BNE-SIN-SGN return last year in SIA business with my 3 year old and my wife, and then this yea BNE-SIN-DEL return also, my observations:

    • Any overnight flight is a godsend in business. EVERYONE can sleep in the flat bed seats
    • My 3 year old for 3 out of 4 trips pretty much sat quietly and watched kids shows and then slept the rest of the time. His mum was able to share the same seat to get him sleeping and then was able to go back to her seat and relax.
    • The flight attendants are not so free to look after your kids and honestly, thats not their job so do NOT expect this.
    • The 1 sector (last year) my son started developing hand/foot/mouth the day of the flight. He was luckily ok BNE-SIN, but screamed all the way from SIN-SGN and in the airport. Point is, it couldnt be avoided as it didnt manifest till halfway, but the joy of business class got ruined. So if your kid is not a great flyer then it may not be worth it if its gonna stop you or your wife enjoying the comforts. Thankfully since that flight, for all 3 other flights as mentioned, he was a dream.

I pay for business class, that's my vice instead of fancy dining every week, or branded clothes/ cars etc, and for my personal reasons, anything above 5 hours and especially night time flights id do it everytime in a heartbeat.

    • Ah nice, thanks for your in depth point of view!

  • The business class flight also includes lounge access, so that's additional value during your layover

  • Depends how deep your pockets are
