How to Treat Rust Spot on Bullbar

Appealing to OzB collective mind :)

I have a rust spot developed under the driving lights. I suspect it was the wrong stuff I used after drilling a hole above the spot for the lights. Stuff was "Black Zink anti-corrozive coating" spray can.

What is the best way to stop rust from spreading, and (b) possibly match the colour of bullbar? Thanks!

Light sand with 1000 grit, Sulfamic Acid, touch-up paint. You can get the paint code from ARB (or what brand it is), if it's colour coded to the car, look under the hood, in the door well or on the VIN plate for the paint code of the car (it will be something like (F12B) take the code to Supercheap, and they give you the paint in how you want to apply it. With such a little spot, you could try a touch-up brush.

    • thanks! Do you know how much roughly it costs at Supercheap for custom paint?

      • not much. its was so cheap i cant remember. check the website.

I'm sure you would have paid < rrp

        • "check the website."

Try soaking a cloth in coke and leaving it on there for a while then give it a gentle rub with the cloth. Looks like the rust hasn’t penetrated much so might ‘buff out’

    • If you can see orange/red, the paint is gone and you have to re-treat and coat it.

It just looks like there is rusted stuff sitting on top of the paint to me. That lines up with ‘as a result of drilling’ when there’s no hole. It could also be that rusty stuff is dripping from the lights.

        • Yep, if that is the case then 100% clean it off and it's all good.

        • Thanks!, It could be, I'll remove the light to check!

  • It's more than likely powder coated

    • yeah! but what does this change?

      • It’s harder to paint match powder coat with paint. Most bull are are powder coated from factory. Some are the painted to colour match the vehicle.

      • Suggest finding out what the surface is from the maker and asking about touch ups. Their knowledge base is the right place to ask.

  • Penetrol perhaps?
