Do I Need an Atmos Surround System? and More

I just thought I ask you guys I’m not really familiar with Atomos etc Dolby vision etc when it comes to movies yes sad even though I buy lots of movies I not got into the technical side of it. I have had a mix bag of TV’s over the years cheapo ones and main one was my 3D TV from 2016 which we still enjoy watching 3D movies of which have kits to catch up on. We even had a Plasma TV that stopped working after about 13 years use.

So decided on two 4K TV’s yes, I finally took the step into 4K I had a small collection of 4K movies we got these earlier this year. We got the TCL 75” C835 4K full array mini led qled at the time I had no idea what 4K player to get at the time. So got the Panasonic dp ub 820k and hooked it up to that TV. LOL I’m sure the TClL is Dolby Vision and so is the 820k player. But am I right you need a good sound system to get the Dolby vision I have never experienced it so not sure what to expect.

I have yet to watch a 4K movie with the TV and player yet but to get the Dolby vision do we need to Dolby vision surround system? Currently we are using and old Yamaha soundbar YAS 108b. Am I right this is not going to be a match for what the TV can provide or what the 4K player has to offer? Is this, what this item be good for or is it not needed.

Our other TV is the Samsung 65” bu800 crystal led UHD 4K smart TV 2022. With this it’s hooked up to the Sony 4K ubx700 player. And with this a very old Sony 2.1 ch htmt 300 compact soundbar with Bluetooth. Last but not least the other TV is a Sony KDL 65w850c 3D TV and we still enjoy our 3D movie watching with tons yet to see. With this is hooked up to the Sony htct180b sound system.

Do I need an Atmos surround system like this to benefit say from my TCL TV and Atmos 4K player?

Would using my Samsung 65” bu8000 and the Sony ub x700 4K player benefit from using say the Sony htct180 sound bar or better with upgraded this particular set up here would be occasional film viewing and gaming.

And I was thinking the old Sony 3D TV goes into the bedroom and use the 3D player with that and a normal Blu-ray player and leave the Sony 2.1 ch htmt 300 compact soundbar with Bluetooth with that.

If it was recommended a better sound bar and it was for the day TCL TV, I could always use the Yamaha 108 with the 3D TV.

What’s your thoughts maybe I wrong but maybe I’m not fully set up to experience the Atmos. Sorry for the long post just trying to explain my set up.

I do plan on putting the Panasonic TV where the 3D is now and after Christmas setting up a Xbox x to that Panasonic TV. So obviously I be swapping over the 3D TV for Panasonic. As Panasonic is 4K probably be best with that TV. I know the TCL TV is a better gaming TV but it’s staying in the other room.

It seems like you are confusing Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. They are not the same thing (one video, one audio).

Your DP-U820 Blu-Ray player does not support Dolby Atmos (according to the Panasonic website) so you would need a compatible Atmos speaker system (and/or Atmos AV Receiver) and of course appropriate media to support the additional channels.

There's far too much unnecessary waffle and lack of paragraphing structure in the rest to convey clearly whatever else you are trying to ask.

  • I would not have a clue I just know my surround systems are a bit dated now and upgraded my tvs and got 4K players and I always here about how great a movie sounds on atmos i believe.

I pretty sure the two 4K players I got one was dobly vision and Dolby atmos. There was definitely differences.

You need to take a few steps back.

Google "what is Dolby Atmos". Read about it. Learn what it is. Then google the questions you have.

Then Google "what is Dolby Vision" and repeat.

Then maybe you'll be in a position to know what you want or can articulate a question here.

Unfortunately your post is the equivalent of "I hear a lot how good boats are, I know nothing about boats, I think they go on water and I might have water near me, should I buy a boat?"

Woah, that was a real word salad.

  • I'd get it. You can get speakers that will act as the L and R but they also have speakers on top of them that bounce sound off your ceiling to act as the Top L and R, so you don't actually need to mount speakers into your ceiling to achieve the effect. Speakers are often wireless these days too which makes the side and back speakers and subs easier to manage.

They definitely build these things into movies and TV shows. Surround would give you extra things like the sound of people eating behind you during a restaurant scene, but atmos will give you helicopters flying overhead, the sound of an upstairs neighbour banging on their floor, a tornado swirling around you, etc.

  • It's a yes from me

  • Need ChatGPT to summarise this.

    • The user is seeking advice on optimizing their home entertainment setup, specifically regarding Dolby Vision and Atmos. They currently have a TCL 75" C835 4K TV with a Panasonic dp ub 820k 4K player, and a Samsung 65" bu800 Crystal LED UHD 4K TV with a Sony ubx700 4K player. They inquire about the need for a Dolby Vision surround system and Atmos for the TCL setup, and if the Sony htct180 soundbar is sufficient for the Samsung setup. They also consider relocating equipment and mention plans for an Xbox X. Overall, the user seeks recommendations on sound systems and potential improvements to enhance their viewing and gaming experience

      • Interesting that your summary and pantsparty's summary are worded quite differently even though the context is broadly the same.

This is too hard to read. You made another post a few days ago which also had horrible grammar (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/821508). Chat GPT summarises this post as:

“The user is seeking advice on optimizing their home entertainment setup, which includes two 4K TVs (TCL 75" C835 and Samsung 65" BU800), a Panasonic DP UB-820K 4K player, a Sony UBX700 4K player, and various sound systems (Yamaha YAS 108B, Sony HTMT 300, Sony HTCT180B). They express uncertainty about the technical aspects such as Dolby Vision and Atmos and inquire about the need for a sound system to fully experience these features. Additionally, they plan to introduce an Xbox X to the setup.

In summary, the user is looking for guidance on whether their current sound systems are suitable for Dolby Vision and Atmos, particularly for the TCL TV and Panasonic 4K player. They also seek advice on optimizing their Samsung TV and Sony UBX700 player setup, as well as potential upgrades for the soundbars. Finally, they plan to rearrange the TVs and introduce an Xbox X to the Panasonic TV after Christmas.”

Sound bars are rubbish for dolby atmos audio. They try their best by creating reflections of various surfaces, but this is very in efficient and great. If you want good dolby atmos, invest in a good receives and speakers.
