Best 65inch TV for Gaming - sub ~$1,200.

Looking to buy 2x 65inch Tv's for PS5 gaming and sport for my games room, to replace 2 old plasma's.

Any suggestions on the best options available?

I have a X90L Sony which I really enjoy, but would need to look at the X80L for my price range I'd say, which I've seen at ~$1,000 during BF. Open to other suggestions as well as I don't know a lot about the X80L in comparison.

So far Boxing day sales have been lackluster for TVs.

Dont go x80. The x90L is the ideal value as is the perfected FALD tech with strong processor. The x85L is still FALD but without the stronger processor of the x90L.

Dont settle for x80. Must be x85 worst case go for a different brand. Do not buy edge lit these days!

    • Thanks for the advice!

make sure it’s 120hz minimum for gaming

    • That doesn't always mean its good for gaming. The low end tvs that have 4k 120fps support etc cut corners due to poor hardware.

I.e. microLED backlight on some TCL models even high end ones becoming horrible as tv can't handle backlight algorithms for controlling the hundreds of zones refreshing 120 times per second.

Easy for non optimised tvs to look ok when playing netflix at 24/30 frames per second. Dont go for cheap brands that have microLED. Either Sony x95 or Samsung QN90.

      • I wish I shared your knowledge!!

I think my main issue is also the price. Around $1250 incl. any CBs is my top end so might just need to wait for an exceptional deal.

        • Easier to get a really good mid range 55" at that price. A 65" for $1500 is achievable just wait for March/April as thats when a lot of the best runout sales happen.

      • I add in one spec. The rest of you can add in other specs and checklist or selective models and brands.
4K/120hz is a must for gaming that’s what I meant.
PS5 output 120Hz, if you go beyond that 240Hz it doesn’t do any harm while doesn’t add advantage for your PS5.
        Certainly stay away from 60Hz

If I’d wanna be specific, I recommend Sony 65x85. It is the starting point or model where it’s good enough for gaming. Anyone could always pay top dollar for better ones. But is it worth it for gaming in this perspective? That’s why this recommendation.

Whether you go for the latest year suffix L which is 2023 improvement from earlier years. The improvement is significant like full array and game menu. Other specs are quite similar.

While Model 2022 K or 2021 J are actually similar and a bit more savings. Similar because due to Covid, not much improvement in design and production. I’d choose Sony 65X85J for savings.

Remember to look for HDMI 2.1 port

    • Thats not always an indicator that it can utilise the 2.1 protocol. Kind of like in the same way a basic soundbar can advertise as Dolby Atmos if it can read/interpret the Atmos metadata and maybe make a half arse attempt at virtualisation…it is not Atmos by any stretch of the imagination.

Like with Atmos there are no standards for what it needs to be able to do to be able to advertise as hdmi 2.1 it only has to have the port and support some of the functions to some extent.

Very hard to make informed decisions without hunting down forum posts and GOOD reviewers

  • Does this mean the TCL c845 isn't good for Xbox series X?

    • It is…to an extent. Personally I wouldnt go near it as Ive seen what my Sony x95k looks like without dimming algorithims on and would hate if that was the norm whilst gaming 😬.

Sony x90l is a better tv than tcl c845 full stop. Sony FALD, format support, image processing is better than TCLs offering by a mile.

In theory TCL should be amazing as it has soooo many more dimming zones. Though more zones you have the more reliant you are on good processing of algorithms to handle all those zones.
