Much better product, and $60 change left over.

  • Has anyone compared this to a UE Hyperboom?

    This is not equivalent…

I have this boombox and the bass is best in class. If you love bass, this is an absolute beast, I happily paid much for for this.

  • I have the JBL Boombox 3. Used at a family Christmas at the park just recently. I had on max volume most of the time. I couldn't belive it only lasted about 5 hours or so.

especially in an open space, any speaker will sound quieter due to not enough sound reflections (from walls etc).

the quoted battery life on bluetooth speakers is never at max volume. it is an "estimate" which is usually based on around 40% volume in a half indoor/outdoor environment with walls. the battery will last longer if you play at lower volume, and run out much quicker at higher volume.
just to give you an idea every +3dB increase in volume requires double the electrical power. 3dB differences in volume also happens to be the "noticeable difference in volume" for the average person.
so you can imagine how much the power consumption changes the speaker can get very efficient at lower volume levels, and then exponentially consume lots of power at higher volume levels.

even the Sony in this deal will not last 30 hours at maximum volume. again it's an estimate. but Sony tends to have very good design (output/power efficiency) so typically does a bit better than other speakers in general. but if I had to guess I would still expect less than 8 to 10 hours at max volume on the Sony.

here are some tips for getting more battery life out of your Boombox 3 next time.
first, if you can try to place it on the ground in front of some larger solid objects (maybe there is a park BBQ or barrels/eskies) this will help because any sound (mostly lower bass and lower mids) will bounce back off the close objects and result in a louder volume meaning you can use a lower volume level on the speaker. a wall is best but it doesn't have to be a solid wall a combination of larger objects like a case of beer, a surfboard and an esky will still help even if there is small gaps in between them.
next option is to reduce bass on the speaker. if you don't have an EQ some speakers have an "outdoor mode" which cuts bass. this allows the speaker to reduce it's power consumption as bass requires the most movement of the speaker cone and consumes the most energy. this can work together with placing the speaker close to solid objects because you naturally get more bass because it bounces back, so you can use the lower bass outdoor mode and still get ok bass.
