Fengmi/Formovie S5 HD Mini Projector, Auto Focus, 4P Keystone $794 Shipped @ Nothing Projector

60

I've been semi looking for a replacement/better projector for my golf sim (than the $150 amazon jobby, which to be fair has done the job well, just not enough adjustability to make best use of the setup). I wanted something light as it's mounted on the frame, and need good keystone as it's a peaked ceiling so the projector is above screen height pointing down. This has been $816 for a while now, but had a small price drop today so I bit the bullet.

I got a price match here: https://vividstorm.com.au/product/formovie-s5-alpd-laser-pro… for the 2 year warranty after previous discussions in other mini projector threads.

    At this price point you are better off with the Samsung freestyle

  • Does this have Google TV inbuilt? Can it do Netflix above 480p (ie have the DRM chip)?

  • Note that S5 is not a great performer compared to for example Dangbei D5X Pro

    I own this and here are some things you may want to know.
    Whilst super clear and detailed, it's upscaled 1080p from a 720 sensor I believe. Image looks great and bright but there is a very slight blur. But at this price I think it's one of the best amongst competition.
    You'll need to manually adjust some settings to get the best looking picture.
    The sound is amazing, not bass heavy but great for TV speakers so to speak.
    Best projected onto a wall or something "tight" as a sheet or blinds that have 'waves' in them result in wavy image too.
    Cannot install Google Play but USB input makes side loading easy.
    You'll need to install "Projectivy" launcher to get the best English experience and use button remapper to make home button default to said launcher.
    Speakers are great.
    Software is great.
    I use it with a Chromecast so a lot of the software / launcher side of things are a luxury not a necessity.
    Build quality and design are pleasing to the eye and touch.
    Overall I've been happy with it at this price point.

      It's a 0.23" DMD chip so native 480p pixel shift 4 times to get 1080p.

      The other "higher end" portable projectors have 0.33" DMD - still not native 1080p but higher native res of 720p, shift twice to get 1080p.

      The 0.23DMD chip can project 960*540 pixels, and the native resolution is 480p;

      The 0.33DMD chip can project 1280*720 pixels, and the native resolution is 720P;

      The 0.47DMD chip can project 1920*1080 pixels, and the native resolution is 1080P.
