Question on Funds Transfer from America Banks to Australian Banks (BSB Issue) - need help

Does anyone know or had experience with transfer funds (USD) from US banks (internet banking) to Australian banks (eg ANZ Bank)?
My relative is trying to transfer USD 500 to me by using her Citibank NA account in the US. However she was unable to find the BSB field to put in my ANZ bank bsb number. She could not transfer the funds on the website as a result of that.

Does anyone know what to do in this case? I am sure there are plenty people who had transfer funds from US to AU previously.
I need help on what to do with BSB number as there is no such field in the transfer template of international transfer on Citibank NA's website (I was told there is no such field in the option to fill in BSB number).

Do you combine BSB number and Account number in the same field (eg Account number)?

Any input or helps would be appreciated.

  • Might be best to Google and educate yourself. You'd need a SWIFT code which can be found by Googling or your bank's website. That's assuming you're attempting a wire transfer (bank account to bank account).

  • Google says:
To receive an international money transfer, you'll need to provide the sender with: Your ANZ branch name and address. Your account name and full account number. The ANZ SWIFT code, which is ANZBAU3M.

    LFO says:
Also consider if funds will be FXed to AUD; or USD if having an ANZ account with USD.

International transfers are via the SWIFT system, BSB is for Australian transfers only …

You need the SWIFT details of your account from the Australian bank, the sender then has to initiate an international transfer (usually called a SWIFT transfer in the US) and enter your accounts SWIFT details, not the BSB/Acc (but it can include parts of these - like account number) …

Much easier to use crypto or other services like Wise :P

  • As above, provide your bank's SWIFT code.

From overseas, combine BSB + account number used in Australia for the account number. Say if BSB = 111222, account number 999999999, the account number for international transfer to Australia would be 111222999999999.

  • Thanks everyone. Yes the swift code is provided.
I'll ask her to try the combined BSB and Account number as trex mentioned.

    • For when I transfer money from the USA

The bsb is put in the “Sort code” box

      • Is this using the CITIBANK NA website or app?

        • No.

  • PayPal as a gift?

You dont need bsb in this case. Swift code and full account number is sufficient when doing international money transfer.

Open a Wise account with USD and AUD accounts, get them to transfer to your new US account. Then you convert it to AUD and send it to your normal account.
This will give you the lowest fees and simplest transaction. Aussie banks will charge you a fortune to receive USD then give you an awful exchange rate.

    • True but is it worth it for a one off $500? I get paid in USD and have a Wise USD account in the US which has been great. Highly recommend if the payments are ongoing.
