Is Applecare+ for MacBooks worth it in Australia?

I've never really bought Applecare+ on any of my apple products but I recently just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro from the Apple store and I have free AppleCare+ up until the 5th of January. I heard Australia's Consumer Laws are pretty good and I think we get at least 2 years of protection for all apple products, and I think even 3 years for MacBooks. Is it worth paying $160 a year for my Macbook's AppleCare+? Or are the Consumer Law's enough?

No. There's no additional warranty beyond your consumer rights. You're buying an insurance plan.

I buy Applcare + to cover accidental damage. Worth it for an iPhone, maybe not for a MacBook unless its for school use or something.

We bought it for our iPad for the screen damage insurance. $50 for a screen replacement (probably more now) for an accidental break seemed like a good idea and the cost of Applecare tends to be inline with the 3rd party offers from Jbhifi and the like.

Just FYI(and for any others interested), amex offers complimentary smartphone screen protection on some of its more premium cards(https://www.pointhacks.com.au/american-express/smartphone-sc…). Found out we had it when my wife dropped her phone and smashed her screen, and I checked my cover and found it was covered. Excess was 10% of the screen replacement cost(so 10% of $220’ish for an iPhone screen repair at Apple Store).

I guess it depends how you treat your Macbook and what convenience is worth to you. AppleCare is almost no questions asked repair - if you invoke ACL you'll have to really convince them they need to do something.

  • If you would use the phone support a lot to have stuff explained to you then you can get a lot of value out of it imo. You usually get a cheerful American answering the phone. But if you're a battle hardened geek then you'll probably never use it, and if you're careful with your tech you may be better off relying on your contents insurance for damage and theft and just pay the excess.

If I was buying refurbished I would get Apple Care+ I think just for the battery. But I wouldn't buy a refurbished MacBook again after my 12 inch refurb battery broke fast. And keyboard is mush. Great mini laptop otherwise tho..

    • Thanks, I actually got lucky with my M1 Pro Mac as it only had 6 cycles and the capacity was still at a 100%

Refurbished may be classified differently as it is NOT new. S such it may be worth it, but you will need to figure it out.

    • I think it states that it covers everything as long as you buy it from a store here in Australia.
