Ideas for Website, App, Tools, Plugin Development

Hey fellow bargain hunters,

I've got a bit of a creative itch and spare time in coming months, and I know there's a bunch of talented developers on this forum who might share the feeling. So, let's put our heads together and vomit some amazing ideas for new apps, websites, tools, or even plugins!

I'm not a coding whiz, but I've got some good understanding of how to use the open source platforms like wordpress, joomla, opencart, php, html etc. and a burning desire to create something practical and helpful. Maybe some of you're a coding guru yourself, or you've got some awesome web development skills.
Perhaps you've just got a killer idea and already working on it.

Of course, it doesn't have to be just about saving money! Maybe you have an idea for an app that makes life easier, entertains us, or just plain spreads some joy. Let's hear it!

We can share and refine ideas, collaborate on development (if anyone's interested!) Plus, if my limited skills actually manage to build something awesome, you guys will be the first to know (and reap the benefits!).

So, OZBargainers! Let's brainstorm, innovate, and maybe even change the world!! P.S. Feel free to add any specific skills or areas of expertise you'd be willing to contribute. You never know who you might inspire!

Looking forward to your brilliant ideas! Some examples could be

  • Cashback comparison site
  • FIRE calculator
  • Price trend prediction
  • AI assistant
  • Ai powered to do list

Please note that I am not saying that I will develop anything. Just starting thread to see what ideas people have and if any of the tech wiz here can develop it.

Don't know if it's applicable or even possible, but would be awesome if you can create a plug in that can pick up Amazon lightning deals + stackable coupon codes. There is a small group that is currently doing this manually so if any part of it can be automated it would help ozb community and save a lot of manual labour and time.

The Amazon low stock/warehouse page is where it is usually posted due to low stock in lightning deal.

Sometimes they get posted as deals too like these for example where is is discounted and then can stack coupon on top.

      Warning: Big Bang Theory

Why would that need a warning?

          Pick an angle

          • not funny (subjectively)
          • "I've never been a fan of Internet Explorer"
          • laugh track
          • you laugh at rather than along with the characters
          • Adorkable misogyny
          • ableism
          • @ihfree: Humor is subjective

            I find it hilarious

Im not tortured by being woke though

            • @bargain huntress: Personally, I've never been able to watch enough of the show to form an opinion on the points which you would consider to be "woke."

As you've repeated, humour is subjective. It is a popular show for a reason.

Once you strip the show of its laugh track, is just not funny, IMO. Besides, laugh tracks are for sheeple - you laugh on command at unfunny things - BAZOOKA!

A decent search engine for Ebay discount codes would be a win, since Ebay seem unable to do it themselves.

  • A plugin that downloads a packet to the website visitor's computer and mines bitcoin for you.

    • wow.. is there such thing? Thats scary though

      • +1

Web based crypto (not Bitcoin) miners were a thing for a while. I haven't seen one recently though.

An app where people who have zero work ethic, and rely on the web to think for them, can download one.

    • That will be handy.Isnt it? I am sure many will be eligible to use that app as little ethics left in the world.

Make an app idea generator maybe?

    • I can make AI idea generator in less than 10 min using open ai API. In fact, worked on that in the past but it wont get much life as any AI site chatGPT or bard will do the work. My point of asking this is the human side - whats needed and whats not available and also if its doable.

Make a hard drive price scraping site similar to disk prices.com but instead of just Amazon also check prices on popular Aussie tech retailers' sites like mwave, scorptech and mwave. Allow users to receive alerts.

Once that's up an running expand to include other hardware like RAM and CPU and Gpu.

Then expand to include other countries.
    Then expand to include desks
    Then gaming chairs
    Then energy providers
    Then house rentals
    Then houses for sale
    Then salaries
    Then insurance
    Then nuclear power plants
    Then weapons of mass destruction

    • It shouldnt be difficult to scrape the disk prices from these sites. Issue will be to categorise them as per disk prices .com Interesting concept on disk prices.com I wonder how many people may be using that site. I will check if it comes in search when I search for relevant keywords on google. Looks pretty flat but if people are using it, I am sure the owner may be making good affiliate income.

  • We could make an Australian discount site together. Users could post links to discount products and we could split the affiliate income with a script that adds our own affiliate tags to the links. We could call it AustriaBargain.com.au.

  • A neg checker for ozbargain.

    • Sounds interesting. You mean, list of ozbargain posts with most negative likes?

      • +2

Nah, he probs means a 'who negged me?' app.

A portal to compare prices of like items on sale in big 3 grocery chains (Wollies, Coles and Aldi) may be local IGA too to give comparison to tight arse bargainers on where to buy the next kilo of potatoes, onions and red chillies : )

    • +1

thats a good idea. I am sure I have seen something similar on Ozbargain in the past. I will check and share if I can find a website to do this. Also, it would be challenging as Aldi may not provide their APIs so it will be a data scraping and its not sustainable sometimes due to IP blockage. I am sure someone can do it.

Quick googling shows https://www.wiselist.app/ which does it, not sure if ALDI is covered ? Cheers
