Rainwater Tank Pump Reccommendations

Hi guys, we have a 1000l rainwater tank that we are thinking of putting in a pump. Not connected to toilets, just normal watering in the garden. Size is an issue as the space we have for the pump is a bit tight. Anyone have any good recommendations of a small but decent water pump?

Thanks.

Head to your nearest irrigation shop, they usually have a heap of different types for sale and you'll get better advice than just going to Bunnings.
Our current pump is a RainMaster brand and has been going strong for about 10 years, was around $300 from memory.

Make sure to get one that cuts off automatically when it senses no water.

    Otherwise, planty of them around.

  • 1000L is pretty small. Won't take long to exhaust that. I have a 4000L tank and I just use a small DC pump. It gives a good 7l/min.

  • I have a Kärcher BP2 for my 5k liter tank. Works great and can be turned on/off with a little foot pedal. Costs around $250

Don't get the crap at Bunnings.
Use a pre filter. Buy a decent Onga or Davey or Grundfos pump. (The best you can afford)
Even the basic models should suffice and will last for years.

1000L tank is tiny. Basically an IBC. Don't leave the tap on because if a hose bursts you'll have zero water and risk the pump.
(Better ones have run dry protection)

  • Have Onga pumps for larger tanks around yard and they are great ..but
For the smallish 2k tank near house - just used a Ozito from bunnings and it has not missed a beat in over 2 years and was about $200 or so from memory - also just used for gardening - pressure head so just stays powered and it fires up when the hose starts - was sceptical, but for intended use it fits the bill spot on.

      Touch some wood, Sal.
The early Ozito pumps (blue) were OK (just) the later grey ones are crap. Ours had an easy life ( with filter) and still carked it,early. After 2 returns Bunnings convinced me to give up. Cheap Chinese pumps (multiple brand names) love eating impellers too. Went Onga because I want reliability, not a lottery.

  • If you want to save space, put a submersible pump inside the tank. Problem solved!

    Would this type work?

    • My one of these has just died.. was installed under the house in a sump in late 2020.. lucky I checked as I hadn't heard it run with all the rain we've had the past few days in Melb.. lesson learnt. Off to a proper pump shop.

For rainwater tank operations, sure.. probably fine.. I'm not trusing this again, so headed to a pump shop and shall try and see how the 4yr warranty return with no receipt goes at bunnos..

  • What do you want to achieve from your pump? How much height do you need to lift the water (head) above the tank? Can you gravity feed and negate the need for it at all?
