Urgently Need to Replace iPhone, Want Advice

My iPhone 8 screen cracked and it's not worth repairing.

Where's the sweet spot for iPhone price/performance nowadays, and where can I look for a decent deal? I don't need the latest one, but I want to be able to run the latest iOS without worrying about Apple withdrawing support any time soon.

KMart had a refurbished 11 for just under $500 if that helps.

    • iOS support likely finishing up by iOS 18, I believe. Have been looking around for a iPhone for my old man

I'm still using my iPhone 8, which was a refurb. Doesn't get the new iOS updates, but still works. Will hang onto it for a bit longer at this stage.

iPhone 12, last handset to come with 64GB, oldest phone with 5G, supported to 2027

  • iphone 15 or iphone 14 pro

unfortunately missed the good deals on 15 pros over xmas / boxing day

    • hard to find a good price on the 14 pro I've found, I really hoped it'd drop to less than the price of the 15 on release (I know it's better, but stores do odd things clearing out old stock) but no go.

  • Refurbished offer great value. You can likely do better than that KMart deal. Maybe a 12 for $500?

I only just moved from an iPhone X to a 15 Pro Max. The X was still fine, but was no longer supported with IOS 17.

However……… 'Apple withdrawing support' does not mean your device turns into a brick and suddenly stop working. It just means that the very latest OS doesn't run on it. Most longer-term apps will continue to work perfectly. Perhaps some newer ones will not. 'Withdrawing support' also doesn't mean you will suddenly start getting worms, viruses, malware, etc. If you haven't up until now, then those spotty 13-year-old hackers in Belarus are not going to attack -old- model iPhones. They will go for the latest. (But overall security on iPhones is pretty good, and generally not an issue for 'normal' users.)

So, my advice… go for a refurb, or… take life in hands on Gumtree or FB and for the same money get a later model.

    • Where would you suggest I look for a 12 at that price? Sounds good to me!

      • Too many examples to mention. Google: "refurbished iphone :au"

@sam-1966: Phonebot $579 In my experience Phonebot (a reseller) gradings are more consistent than Reebelo (a marketplace)

My iPhone 8 screen cracked and it's not worth repairing.

Weren't these the last of the easily repairable screens?
I remember with my 6s i got it down to 15 minutes changing out the old one and fitting the new $25 screen off aliexpress. Mind you the battery would be cooked by now.

i reckon a secondhand Iphone 13 pro would be a great bang for buck.

    • I looked on iFixit and it takes a suction cup grabber, spadgers, steady hands plus the new screen … and even then someting doesn't work properly IIRC. Also, the battery is not great. Thanks for the suggestion on the iPhone 13!

    • I had battery swaps on an old SE down to 15mins too. they were super easy.
and that included getting the screen off too, so it'd be a good value 2-in-1 for under $50

still, any money into an old phone is gonna feel like a waste

  • Get a new one for USB-C, or try to wait til they get cheaper when the new model comes out.

  • I just returned iPhone 15 Pro and got the iPhone 13. I have spare lighting. USB-C is used for Mac and iPad. Reverse charging is pretty useless given the battery won't last that long. Saved $500 and got an ESR Magsafe battery as a backup.
