Absolutely - for genuine refugees. This family were not genuine refugees.

Only refugees through the UNHCR should be allowed into Australia.

        • -1

Refugees most of them flee the war torn countries then try to turn Australia into same

          • +1

@coolc: Indeed. Much of the increase in antisemitism, for instance, across the West is being driven by fundamental Muslims who have migrated to the West and brought their backward, 3rd World mumbo jumbo with them. They are of course sided in their hatred by useful idiot do-gooders who buy into their sh1te.

      • +7

The overwhelming majority of Australian's have compassion for refugees and support the refugee program. However they also know that it needs to be sustainable, in terms of costing and resources for the country to resettle these people, but also fair. Nothing gets up Australian's nose more than someone jumping a queue, or in this case, taking advantage of a generous migration program to backdoor their way in. Most people will empathise with this families situation, but at the end of the day they abused and manipulated the process for their own personal gain over other more deserved people.. Outside of the noisy activist bubble, most people would gladly have sent these guys packing on the first flight out of here with a solid kick up the arse to boot.

      • +6

How many do the Saudis, Kuwaitis and Japanese take in.
The world's refugees are NOT Australia's problem.

  • +1

nahhh… they should repay the tax payers…

    • +4

Not sure this constitutes a negative vote for the deal itself

      • +13

Buying this is like encouraging illegal immigrant

        • +2

not really considering they are now here legally

catching an uber is like encouraging legal immigration that is pricing many out of shelter (owned or rented)

          • +2

@Gdsamp: They committed fraud to gain their status.

That's illegal last time I checked.

I have transited through Colombo few times while traveling on Sri Lankan Airlines. I have seen complete peace in Sri Lanka, and Tamil lives happily there. Their story is not genuine and IMHO they are not genuine refugees.

    • -6

      You cannot be serious

      • +21

Every court found they were not genuine refugees.

They only kept saying in Aus on minor procedural issues.

        • -3

Perhaps, and that is a far better argument than the "I went there a few times and everything seemed fine, therefore there's no problems there" viewpoint.

According to court documents from June 2018, Nades claimed he was forced to join the LTTE in 2001 and was harassed by the Sri Lankan military.
However, he frequently travelled between Sri Lanka, Kuwait and Qatar between 2004 and 2010 for work, during the civil war that ended in 2009.

Educate yourself before posting dumbass opinions please.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_crimes_during_the_final_…

I know a journo that was allowed in after the govt had done their best to hide what they'd got up to and the shit he saw was harrowing.

      • +11

Educate yourself before you post low IQ dumbass opinion. You are posting a 2009 link and they came to Australia in 2013. The situation has changed a lot after 2011. I have travelled via Colombo few times and I know how Tamils are living happily there.

        • Nades returned to SL in 2011, but was taken and tortured. He then fled Lanka and arrived at Christmas Island in April 2012.

        • +2

Christ you're thick af, what happened to all Tamils living happily there thicko? So after having tens to hundreds of thousands of them genocided in 2009 they were all living there happily in 2013 eh. Genuine 2 IQ brainlet you are.

          • +4

@Arealtur Kishman 69: If you’ve never been to Colombo, just keep your mouth shut. No need to share your opinion from googling and Wikipedia

            • +4

@Iwantthatbargain: You could just admit you're wrong instead of acting like a child and chucking a tanty when someone calls out your bullshit.

P.S. Yeah, I have been to Colombo, multiple times actually, not just for a layover either and yet you still won't find me acting the muppet pretending to be a regional expert.

P.P.S. Unlike you I know people that covered what happened in the "war" on the ground and also what took place in the preceding years, so you can keep insisting that everything was all hunky dory in 2013 (ie 4 years post-ethnic cleansing) cos you "transited through Coolombo" as much as you want Mr regional expert, just expect your nonsense to be called out for what it is.

              • @Arealtur Kishman 69: Lol I have been to Lanka..on a layover

I have been there few times myself- don't see much ethnic violence…sure there prob is some but prob similar to other countries (western or not)

Not uncommon at all - regardless of the book (unless it's hugely popular of course)

  • +13

Can we all agree, legal/illegal, it doesn't matter right now we just need less of all kinds of migration ?

Before someone calls me racist, I don't care if 100% of our immigration comes from whatever your favorite country of choice is as long as we have far far less migration.
Housing is completely broken, the only people I want brought in are builders that we take through being certified and trained to build houses here.

    • +7

You're not racist for calling a slow down or pause on immigration.
Consider this. Over 30% of people living in Australia are foreign born. One of the highest numbers, if not the highest number in the OECD.
It's unsustainable if we want to keep our current living standards. Per capita GDP keeps declining. Housing is now expensive.

      • +5

Exactly. As migration has boomed, our per capita GDP and HDI score has fallen. That benefits nobody apart from big business, the higher education sector and government.

        • -1

          Source?

    • +4

Genuine skilled migration - maximum of 75k visas a year (a skilled worker plus partner and two children is four visas not one)
No work rights for students after graduating - they can go home and apply for a skilled visa when they have experience (one of the 75k visas above)
No family reunion - we require skilled migrants to be under 45 yet they can bring in their elderly parents. That's mental
We can have plenty of temporary migration but they can only ever be temporary - unless they can get one of those 75k visas

At the moment the system is a joke and is being massively exploited by people who are not skilled and shouldn't be here. That's not their fault, rather it's the fault of successive governments that have allowed this to happen. Also, the standards for skilled migration are, largely, only applied to Western People - much of Asian skilled migration is fraud and smoke and mirrors. Australia used to have a robust and fair migration system - now it's broken.

      • +1

It wouldn't be hard to enforce a competency exam that is sat here in Australia prior to finalising their application.

        • +2

I agree. A friend of ours used to work in immigration. She told us that most of qualifications, experience etc presented to them from applicants from India is fake or embellished and that China, Nepal, Pakistan etc is not much better.

          • +2

@R4: Yup, totally agree with this. This is on-ground experience working with these so-called ‘experienced’ professionals from the list you mentioned..

  • +23

They took the place of genuine refugees. Their example is not to be celebrated.

    • +13

They should be ashamed of themselves for the lies and deception.

  • +6

They left after the war and used the loopholes and fake stories to get their visa in Australia.

If you travel to srilanka you ll see how many tamils live in colombo and living a good life

Tamils have faced 76 years of state sponsored killing, torture, sexual violence, arbitrary imprisonment, discrimination and systemic racism that culiminated in the peak of the Tamil Genocide in 2009 where anywhere between 40,000-70,000 Tamils mostly civilians were brutally killed by Sri Lanka Government Armed Forces with the full backing of the highest levels of government (former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and his brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was defence secretary at the time). What is happening in Gaza right now perfectly mirrors what happened in the North and East of Sri Lanka in 2009.

Civilians were forcibly horded into supposed safe 'No Fire Zones' and then indiscriminately bombed in a deliberate fashion by the Sri Lankan military, all whilst they had food, water and medical supplies cut off from theses areas. The evidence for these war crimes and the Genocide are clearly documented in the UK Channel 4 Documentary - No Fire Zone https://nofirezone.org/

There has been no justice or accountability for what happened in 2009 with not a single war crimes prosecution. 100,000s of Tamils were then held in interment camps under appalling conditions after the end of the conflict for several years which is the period during which Nades and Priya left. The country is still run by many of these high ranking officials responsible for the Genocide in 2009.

Please read their story to understand the truth of what happened to them individually. Priya's husband was burned alive by armed forces, her mother sexually assaulted. So many mistruths have been spread about the family by prominent people such as Peter Dutton and Scott Morrison, who words the average Australian takes at face value without ever questioning.

The 'Fast Track' Asylum claim processing system through which Nades and Priya's claims (as well as 10,000 other asylum seekers) were initially denied has been thorough discredited by legal experts from across Australia.

The courts have nothing to do with assessing the merits of a person's asylum claim. They can only review matters of process regarding the application so it is completely wrong to say the courts have said they are not refugees.

Finally, the country report on Sri Lanka from the Department of Foreign Affairs used to assess Asylum claims has been thoroughly discreted by a ruling by the UK Upper Tribunal that critised its lack of credible sources.

The UN High Humans Commission continues to flag ongoing human rights abuses including torture and arbitrary imprisonment that it reports continues to be disproportionately used against Tamils. There are several examples of Tamils being killed in custody in 2022-2023 in the North and East This is in addition to the heavy militarisation of Tamil areas in the North and East with the military even running schools and many businesses. Tamils continue to live in a security state under oppressive surveillance where they are at constant risk of physical and sexual violence and torture. Tamils also regularly suffer arbitrary imprisonment, including politicians and journalists. Tamils can live in Sri Lanka but only if they are prepared to forget the genocide, not seek justice or true freedom from persecution through self-government.

The extremist Sinhala Buddhist chauvinists in power have cultivated anti-Tamil and anti-Muslim hatred and racism for decades to distract the majority population from their own corruption and mismanagement. They see Sri Lanka as a Sinhala Buddhist state and want nothing but for the Tamils to disappear or stay quiet and accept their fate as second class citizens.

Sure you can travel to Sri Lanka on an Australian passport have a great time in Colombo. Heck, you could probably go to Jerusalem right now and have a ball while the Israeli government rains down hell on Gaza. But the reality is very different if you want to be a Tamil who lives in Sri Lanka, who wants to proudly celebrates your identity, your history (including that of resisting genocide for 76 years) and one demands justice and equal rights. The oppression againsts Tamils extends into consitutional law making it illegal to advocate for a separate independent Tamil State, a law regularly used to imprison and persecute Tamils over what should be any people's fundamental right.

To this day, Tamil lands continue to be taken over by the military and for Sinhalese settlers whilst the Tamil cultural identity of the North and East is erased through the demolishing of Tamil religious sites (replaced by Buddhist temples) and the renaming of Tamil areas. Once again this is not dissimilar to what has happened in Palestine for 76 years as well.

So much misinformation with the narrative being controlled by those in power that then deceive the masses in Australia and Sri Lanka. Australia's governments, which include Labor have also been prepared to ignore the war crimes and genocide committed against Tamils. They have never once called for accountability in Sri Lanka, much like they still truly fail to do when it comes to Israel, because the Australian government's interest is only in stopping boats to win votes through their racist wedge politics. They are happy to ignore war crimes and genocide as long as it saves their own political skins.

Why couldn't they just apply like other refugees/migrants? This book could encourage a lot of people in India or surrounding countries. Should rename to "Cheat to Biloela - The story of Tamil family that broken Labor used to capture votes"

    • +10

Economic migrants posing as refugees. Not against immigration, but people like this are taking the place of genuine refugees. They should have been made to apply to migrate under their genuine circumstances.
