Mercedes Benz Dash Cam Dealership Install or Aftermarket

Hi Guys,
Just wondering your thoughts about this.
Recently bought Mercedes. Didn’t come in with dash cam. I asked for a quote to fit in from dealership. They quoting $1174. Front dash cam , rear dash cam and installation all inclusive charge. It supports Mercedes app, supports parking auto on/off when detecting movement etc.

Would it be worth that much $$ or just get aftermarket dash cam from retail shop and do myself ? Easy to do ? Any suggestions for camera?

Thanks

Quote from dealer

DASHCAM-FRT $700
MOUNT-DASHCAM $20
SD-CARD $80
DASHCAM DASHCAM-REAR $180
ELECTRICAL WIRING HARNESS $85

We can't tell you what something is worth to YOU. You might be happy to pay the premium for a hassle-free installation with full functionality as mentioned. You might not care about those added features and prefer to get a Viofo or similar unit off Amazon for a quarter of the price and DIY.

It might help to share some details and specs. Are they offering some basic cheap sensor unit that can be had for $50 or an advanced high res camera one with added telemetry, GPS tracking, cloud uploads through mobile phone etc that have become relatively standard?

      • …… $80 for an SD card! ….

Best ask they install everything and that you'll source your own SD card. :p

        • Yeah. Thought about it. I am gonna ask them to see if they lower price on Monday.

      • You asking the wrong forum, you should know better. Next question, where to find the cheap tyre, quoted me $600 each?

Next post; tried to fit my own dash cam and ruined roof lining, what are my options?
    .

  • I would just pay the dealer and get it done now

It would be worth it if it's nicely integrated. You've spent a premium on a car, why cheap out on the dash cam.

  • Completely depends on the spec of the cam they are proposing

  • Factory Install

Too late for that. Dealership install?

      Only 1080p resolution

      Not worth it

The only reason to consider aftermarket is if you're not planning to own the car for long, so you may transfer the components to your next car.

If the Merc one has specs that are similar to what's on the market now, I'd take the Merc one for sure - just because of the more "seamless" integration.

      "seamless" integration.

      Seems like more to me.

  • I can understand the convenience of getting it installed by the dealer but that is quite exxy. Not the worse that I've seen, when I bought my Audi they wanted 2.5k for a middle of the tier 2ch blackvue cam.

For that a little bit more, you can usually get a 2 ch top of the line blackvue, thinkware cam plus battery pack which gives you around 24 hr power after car is turned off. Problem with hardwiring to car battery, it will drain the battery and not as long on time.

Plus I go through cars pretty often, so I reinstall them in my new cars.

Overpriced junk. Get some quotes from reputable installers to get a legit system. MB app integration is just a gimmick and a misleading selling point.

      • Thanks. I thought so too. Will get a quote from other reputable automobile.

  • If you bought the car new and want to keep them all 'genuine' (which is arguably also better for the resale value), then get that Merc one. Keep in mind that Mercedes-Benz dashcam is nowhere near the specs of the best aftermarket dashcams on the market, it doesn't even record in QHD, let alone 4K.

  • Just get the Merc one if you plan on selling the car later.

As a ‘first off google’ comparison, $800 fully installed here https://www.sydneydashcams.com.au/shop/product/78706/gnet-sy… for a much better camera. I’m sure other places you can get cheaper options. There is a $350 saving already without even trying (if you are in Sydney)

    $100k car and questioning a $1k dash cam…
Just pretend it’s $1k extra on the next service, you won’t even notice

    • Ha ha. Yeah… you are so right.

    • I guess my ozbargain spririt was running very low when i bought the car and now it’s running very high so looking at this $$ spend differently ! 😀

  • Have had no issue with Viofo Dashcam. We used a129 pro duo since 2019 using with sandisk extreme pro microSD. Need to ensure you format the microsd card through Pc or dash cam itself, select sensitivity of motion detection, loop recording, update firmware once in a while, set up emergency recording. There are quite a few newer models now.
