For Studio Ghibli fans! There are quite a few blu-ray + DVD double play sets going cheap at Zavvi. The blu-ray is same region as Australia, but the DVD probably requires region-free DVD player. The price in title includes the 99p shipping, but you pay 99p for multiple items.

  • One of the reasons I don't buy Overseas anime dvds/blurays (in particular R1) is because they generally incorporate ads/trailers at the beginning of the disc.

Do these UK editions contain such ads? As I know the Australian Madman release don't.

Also does anyone know if these UK editions use slim Bluray cases or are they the standard size ones?

    • Hmmm haven't looked at the DVDs but the blu-rays certainly don't have ads.

Edit: I bought Laputa and Arrietty from Zavvi. Laputa is a standard blu-ray plastic case, with both discs in the same case. Arrietty was a special edition, and had a three-fold thick cardbard cover, not the usual plastic case.

Also don't forget the 10% additional discount from UniDays if you are a student! :D

  • Oh Ponyo the Fish. Been a while since I watched it.

  • Worth adding Howl's Moving Castle Blu-Ray + DVD to that list, for £12.44 ($19.28) delivered, also $38 at JB Hifi.

Still patiently awaiting the Princess Mononoke Blu-Ray…

    • Thanks, I'll add that to the list :)

  • Princess Mononoke. End of the world in cartoons.

Forgot the title of one of the better animes I watched. Girl went to province, lived a simple life, met a boy. They became close…geesh I even forgot how it ends, but it was raining outside…then she decided to stay. The end

Hmmmm … who'd have thought moocher was a Ghibli fan?
Great movies, though I have mixed feelings about the Disney dubs. Are there any good alternatives?
I tried the subtitles, but prewfer a dub with Japanese movies. And the kids can barely read.

And don't forget "Pom Poko". Gotta love a family movie where the main characters are furry anthropomorphic animals with giant magical scrotums. They only have the DVD version, but hi-def doesn't make much difference with animations.

    • I have mixed feelings about the Disney dubs.

I'm not sure if all the UK versions are Disney dubs. I'm pretty sure Arrietty had a UK dub done that was separate from the Disney dub.

I never watch them in English though, so I prefer Japanese + subtitles.

    Thanks Totoro!

  • Ponyo ponyo ponyo saka na no ko!

I thought Howl's Moving Castle was a bit average but Ponyo is another gem from Ghibli.
