  • not bad at all, considering their relative price.
There's no GPU/acceleration in this one at all is there?

    • All I know is it’s faster than my DS418

We use one of these DS1821+ at work with 8x 4TB WD Red Plus drives.. Its been rock solid now for 2 years. WebDav and Onedrive cloud sync works very well… I highly recommend it. I didn't bother with the SSD Cash. not worth the risks and its already plenty fast enough even with 2 drive redundancy

      • +3

I have one of these and just use the NMVE drives as read cache, no risk that way.

There's no GPU/acceleration in this model.

Commodore64 If you are wanting a plex server, get yourself a mini pc with at least a 8th gen Intel CPU for Intel QuickSync (You will need PlexPass for HW transcoding) and just use this as storage.

This is a great price, I bought mine for $1500 in April 2023.

        • This. It's almost silly not to have ssd cache if multiple people may be accessing it.

          • @PatoriaN: Can you use any ssd or does it have to be their over top expensive synology branded ones?

            • +2

@ONEMariachi: samsung 970 evo ssd in my 920+.
Synology have a list of approved models

            • @ONEMariachi: No any brand so you can even get cheap ones or second hand.

              • @PatoriaN: Though they do have a compatible listing of you are worried.

        • Even with read cache there's still a risk.. your files are still safer with hard disk drives only..Some people had corruption on power outages with SSD read only cashes ( these were Synology forum users posts ) so its not as safe. but much safer then SSD write caches

          • +1

            @vid_ghost: Get a UPS?

            • @Richardc: Been running Synology NAS's now for 9 years with no SSD's. There;s been power outages.. never any issues, never any files lost.. just turn them back on and they are good to go again. Rock solid.. i will stick to whats been working very well.

        • I'm using a big 16tb hard drive plugged into the synology as a plex server, haven't found a file it lags on yet but also not doing a lot of transcoding with the nvidia shield.

        • +1

Can someone clarify the necessity of transcoding? I believed it's irrelevant unless running a video service for the lowest common denominator, like some Rando attempting to watch Avatar 4k on a 240p watch. Otherwise, why would it be required?

SSD cache is ineffective and a waste of time. However, you can utilize the NVMe slots for a storage pool with https://github.com/007revad/Synology_M2_volume.

The sole reason I chose the Qnap ts-h973AX over this is because of the 1Gbe NICs. The Qnap offers 2x 2.5Gbe + 1x 10Gbe. I also favor DSM 7.1 over QuTS 5.1, but considering the price, opting for a couple of USB 2.5Gbe would be a straightforward decision.

    • Yes, after Synology's top-end consumer models move to Ryzen embedded, they don't include iGPU anymore.

And it's out of stock already.

  • +1

Out of stock as I was about to purchase :(

  • Showing as 1 left when I just clicked on the link.

    • Yep now they’re gone.

  • Does it support 18TB or 20TB drives?

    • Yes, I have 4 WD 20Tb Elements Drives in mine - they had white label WD200EDGZ-11B9PA0 in them.

    • You have a limit of about 100tb so 16tb would be the biggest you want to go unless you do multiple volumes.

      • +1

I have 2 volumes, one is 4x20Tb drives, the other is 4x14Tb

    • +1

Confirm DS1821+ works with 18TB, 20TB and 22TB hard drives

  • Seems already oos

  • +3

Only reason I didn't buy this the other day is that the model number does not align with the actual model number. They have listed the video surveillance model as the part number but yeah not sure if that's just an error. One photo as well had me wondering.

    • +1

Well spotted. Guess those that purchased will find out soon.

      • +1

That 1 in stock has been there for a few days. Was actually less than $900 as well but just didn't sit right with me. Ridiculously cheap, mismatching model number, shonky photo and yeah.

  • listing image is strange but yeah OSS. wonder if it was not amazon US but some seller on amazon US

  • The photo on my order page is also the video surveillance model not the 1821+

  • so fast :(

    • There was only one in stock the last few days. So I'm assuming there was only one…

      • Before I purchased at 4am it said 1 in stock then said 3.

        • Ahh yeah yesterday it was one in stock, and the previous few days as I've been looking for a DS1821.

          Hopefully it's the right model.

          • @shiprekt: Feels like it's a bit of a gamble now but hopefully it pays off. If it doesn't returns are pretty easy.

            • @7hil: you will not get a ds1821. trust me. let me know how it goes in a month. famous last words. i told you so.

  • Placed order earlier but then received cancellation email from Amazon immediately afterwards.

  • +7

part number is VS600HD. google it. you will not get a ds1821. dont waste your time. unless you to have no use off $900 for a month waiting for a refund.

  • +1

I still have the 1815, I'm on my 3rd unit though, first fixed under warranty. This one I've had for about 3 years though. Great Unit. I'd probably rather go a 5 bay and use bigger drives though as 8 is a lot to manage.

  • +4

Last time Amazon had a similar one for $6xx with 32gb,32tb, and people how bought it received a network card.
This one shows the parts number as VS600HD, which is a TV box, I am sure you will receive a TV box instead.
And trust me, Amazon will not fullfill the order as they know they screwed up. If you try, you will be asked to go through some nasty process and get a refund eventually

  • Good for my Linux iso's;-)

  • What do people use it for? Do you really need so much storage?

    • +1

For @mostlygordon its Linux ISOs… not sure about others though 🤪

    • +1

      I have a lot of, videos…😗

  • +1

    Damn I missed out.

For those concerned of getting the wrong item, in a previous Amazon listing / price error, after a lot of back and forth on Amazon chat, similar to a couple of others Amazon eventually 'honoured' the price by offering that if the item was returned and the actual correct item was purchased, they would credit the price difference as promo credit.

Some others got offered to keep the incorrect product (doubt this will happen given the price of this one).

Others got offered a $5 promo credit. (more likely)

  • I have an old 8 bay synology and wanted to upgrade it a couple years ago, but found out the new synology models essentially "blacklist" pretty much all the hard drive brands/models except a few WD i think. there is a way to get around the white listing by modifying a list inside the OS, but that a pain in the butt. So i went to host my own truenas scale server.

If y ou dont have an approved drive on the list, you keep getting an error message about drive compatibility. I also didnt like BTRFS file system which i think synology still uses on DSM.

is the legit listing, looks like this is a scam

  • Great NAS. Got one of these alongside a DS1618+.

  • Previous cheapest is ~$1,350
This has the part number is detail "VS600HD", which seems to be Synology Visual Station VS600HD as the price is closer.
I guess someone linked the wrong item from Amazon US…

Probably you will get order cancelled and need to argue in the Amazon chat to get $10 compensation.
And you will probably get $900 held for a week or 2 if it is fast…

  • 8 bays, how cute :)

  • As others have already said, the model number doesn't match… but if you need further confirmation just search the ASIN ‎shown on the listing which is B0C36RPHJ6 to find the actual item being sold on the Amazon US store which is indeed the VS600HD not the DS1821+ … good luck with the run around for those that managed to order

  • Did anyone get it?

  • So i'm guessing no one got one of these delivered?? Did they cancel or send the vs600 model?

  • +1

received the package today.. and yep.. wrong product.. VS600.. what annoys me the most is that i contacted customer service @ amazon 4 days after ordering.. They confirmed it would be the DS1821+ multiple times - even after i pointed out the mis-information, they requested i send through the details (screenshot) on the error and they would have the "Backend" check it prior to shipping (they would contact me if incorrect blah blah).. didn't hear anything.. item ships.. and its wrong.. Customer service can only offer refund.. they say if they re-ship it would be wrong again anyway.. and would not approve a price guarantee.. lesson learnt for me!

    • +2

Bummer, and then not even a gift card for the stuff around!
You never know with Amazon, it's worth the try as sometimes they come through with the right item, other times not. I purchased a $1900 wireless microphone kit from a similar errored listing for about $500 on Amazon recently, the item got delivered without issue a few days later. Bargain of the year!
