Sharing my usual go-to as I guess not many know about these Maxells that are made in Japan sold at an excellent everyday price from an Aussie small business.

To ease any concerns about these being fakes, the seller claims to be an authorised reseller and I can verify the packaging is identical to the photos on the Maxell website: https://maxell.com.hk/products/energy-products/coin-type-lit… They send 2x 5 packs per unit order.

  • What does the H "high density" mean.

I am not sure if it was me, a dodgy batch, or faulty key fobs; but Mazda and Mercedes key fobs did not play nicely with the Maxell cells. I've been told that Lexus key fobs didn't have this issue.

When I replaced it with the brand new Panasonic (Indonesian made), it worked straight away.

    • IMO more likely an old batch and voltage had dropped which is easy to test with a cheap voltmeter to see if the batteries are all around 3.2-3.3v

      • That won't put a load so they may show over 3v but are unable to deliver any useful power. I use one of those common battery testers with the UV meter, they work for coin cells. It's fiddly but it's better than nothing.

I had a similar issue. Was using Panasonic coin cells and switched over the Maxell H cells and had all sorts of issues in some key fobs. For a test I put a small piece of paper folded to top of the cell before putting the battery cover back, and it was fine. I only noticed this when the key fob wasn't working and when I squeezed the battery compartment it worked.

I never bothered to measure the dimensions, and dont have and Panasonic button cells left in CR2032.

Might not apply, but putting it out there just in case.

  • Perfect, needed some new Air Tag batteries, thanks OP!

Yeah I don't know about these being legit. Every button battery I ever bought from Ebay (all of them were labelled Maxell or Sony) were garbage that died within a few weeks. I think the market is so flooded with the fake ones that it would be hard to believe these are real

    • Agree with you on this, have bought maxwell before thinking they would be good, put them in AirTags which show the battery level and they were a) not 100% like Duracells and b) drained fast

      • The seller seems to be legit as they also have an authentic looking website that sells batteries (https://tapesplus.com.au). So hopefully they are not fake although I still think the Maxell batteries are poor compared to the Duracells I've used in my AirTags.

While that's true, I've been using batteries bought from this seller for a while and they've performed excellently hence why I'm sharing. I wouldn't be living up to my username otherwise.

      • Have you tested these for capacity?

        • Not scientifically no.

Example of one use case is going strong in my digital calipers for the last 6 months, whereas the no-name one that came with it was flat after 3 months. Out of the package none have been flat.

          • @Junk Sifter: If you ever want to try a (admittedly shitty) test, you can clamp a 10,000 ohm resister across the terminals, and measure the voltage until it drops below 2.5v. I did that one, and it was fairly dramatic how much longer the store stuff lasts vs the ebay shit. Takes about 2 weeks though

I've buy these Panasonic x 20 batteries for $23.95, mostly used in smart home sensors and Samsung SmartTags and always have excellent life out of them. Reputable seller too they have sold over 28,000 and have almost perfect feedback. https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/175056498202?var=475190001600

      • Exp 2026 so not as good for those who don't use too many at the same time.

      • There's much larger volumes of fake single use Panasonic cells on the market than other brands. It's a bit confounding to me because Panasonic single use cells are subpar, though I am only judging that based on AAs & AAAs from personal experience in the early 2000s. I can only speculate it's due to perceived brand quality in developing markets where they are sourced from.

Those two factors above are why I've never bought Panasonic coin cells ever. I am perplexed why some people were excited about paying $2 for them.

EDIT: Well it looks like Panasonic AA single use cells haven't changed over the years despite their Eneloop fame. Here's some performance comparisons if they're any indicator of quality across product lines: Choice CBC

    • The Maxwell ones claimed to be in Japan only last 6 months on car fob keys on Mazda 3

So I reckon many fakes out there can’t see this one is genuine especially for low price

      • From this exact same seller?

        • No. But from many different sources eBay, Amazon, Alibaba, even at retail shops

I don't trust Maxwell made in Japan rubbish anymore

Its all Fakes printed made in Japan

          • @neonlight: Maybe it's because you bought Maxwell… Jokes aside, most online marketplaces are flooded with fake batteries from dubious sellers. Were you seriously expecting legit products from Alibaba/Express?

Reject Shop and other discount retailers mostly parallel import their stock which greatly increases the chance of fake products.

      • I just replaced the Maxell CR1620 in my Mazda6 fob this week. Seeing your post, I did a quick search in my emails and found I last ordered a 2 pack from k.g.electronic eBay in 2017 so I'm pretty happy with 3.5 years from each battery.

I've replaced it with a Panasonic cell of dubious origin, out of curiosity since my previous post. If I remember, I'll post an update when it runs out.

  • ATM, Bing Lee sells at $2 for Panasonic (I happened to purchase two about a week ago) - https://www.binglee.com.au/products/panaosnic-cr2032-lithium…

  • CR2032 on sale everywhere

    • Yeah there must be something the government don’t want us to know.

  • Thank you OP

Every time I buy batteries from eBay or Amazon they are always near dead or leaking right out of the packet. I can't find a decent LR54 or equivalent!

    • +1

Same. Waste of money. I threw away so many new but dead ones.

  • Thanks OP

  • I get these: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/234801305221 10 for $10 delivered
Energizer claim 235mah and Maxell "high capacity" are a claimed 220mah.
Not sure if they're legit, but they last forever in RGB remotes and tealight candles etc.

  • thx

  • Aliexpress sells these at $1 for 10.

    • +2

There are cells and there are cells. I've bought plenty of cheap cells online that either don't last or already flat.

    • Please do share the deal.

We take product safety very seriously. We’re reaching out to you because an item you purchased may have been recalled or pose a safety hazard. We recommend that you stop using this product. If you have questions about the item(s), please reach out to the seller or the manufacturer.

    • Interesting. Did they also offered full refund?

      • +1

eBay said contact seller, so I've done that, will see what they come back with.

My gut feeling is it's just non-existent/non-compliant warning labels for Australia.

    • I got it too. I think it is because of children swallowing CR2032 batteries (no matter what brand), which is also the reason why Officeworks and JB Hi-Fi do not sell Airtags (which come with these batteries)

      • but they taste so good!

        • +1

          Feel the burnnnnnn!

  • I order it 2 weeks back and now got this Product Defect email from ebay.
Does anyone know what is the concern they are mentioning?

Shall I ask for a refund?

    • The comment just above yours talks about it. It's probably related to not being shipped in child-resistant packaging.
