Laptop for a Year 12 Student

Hi, looking a couple of laptops for my son, hes in year 12, trying to stay under $1000. Kicking myself i didn't grab 1 on the black friday sales, thought the back to school sale may be better but no. I have found these 2, 1 will need a bigger ssd put it but seems the only good options at the moment. I haven't had a laptop for 10 years, always building desktops. Looking for reliable. If there's any other recommendations let me know.

    trying to stay under $1000

    refurb

    • i've been looking on the used market and refurbs but people just want way to much for their junk. Would rather new, less hassles

Maybe wait until next week when more of the Back to School Sales come out / start. I've got a few emails this week, but I reckon it'll all start next week and ramp up with more discounts.

    will need a bigger ssd

    why?

    • he ran out of space on a 256gb drive last year

      • how ?

As for the two you have suggested. I would go the HP, its smaller and more compact. Will be a lot easier compared to the 15.6 size screen.

Yes a smaller HDD, but a lot of school stuff is now online with schools using Google Drive/Docs or Microsoft.

What did he use in year 11?

    • Guess the upgrade from a notebook to Lap Top!

    • What did he use in year 11?

Did you just assume his pronoun? 😲

      • Likely a boy. A girl that had a laptop in year 11 probably still has a functioning one in year 12. Boys however…

    • a like 6 year macbook air, but its now dead

Since they are in Year 12, It depends what they are studying for HSC. Are they doing multimedia or computer subjects where they need processing power? Are they going to go to uni? Or are they non academic inclined?

    • he is doing computer subjects. There is a chance of uni, but hes undecided, but id like something that will last a few years

  • Get a refurbed HP Elitebook

      • SSD is too small though. Actually looking at your options again I'd say the Asus is pretty good value. It'll do fine for pretty much everything he's likely to being doing, only if he chooses very specialised subjects with heavy workloads in Uni (assuming he goes) might he need something else.

SSDs are super cheap. Just upgrade it

There are tonnes of ex-corporate laptops on ebay.

Search with your desired specs and go from there.

A lot of the sellers offer SSD + RAM upgrades for a small fee.
