Celebrating Australia Day 2024 - Events & Locations, Products & Shops

If you are planning to celebrate Australia Day, please tell us all about it!

What are you going to get up to?

You don't need to spend anything to celebrate Australia Day, but maybe you want to, so:

What's on and where?
What's for sale and where?

It's becoming a little more difficult to find Australia Day events and things - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/825511 - thus the idea for this thread.

Those who dont wish to celebrate are invited to ignore this thread and the date.

Is this about self check outs again?
      Mandatory /s

Nope. Potato Head Dutton wants you to boycott them because they (and Aldi and KMart) aren't selling made-in-China Aussie Day things this year.

Are there any events or classes of event that you feel are missing?

I've been pretty disappointed with recent Australia Day offerings…

Perth has chosen to scale back their fireworks - though I felt Basil undersold the replacement - which was quite acceptable if you can forgive the one minute drone ad for Hancock Prospecting*. It's apparently doing it again this year; it's also another day of FringeWorld.

Melburnians have the tennis and late-night NGV access but that's about it - both Men's semi-finals are that day. Brisbane will see the second day of the Australia v West Indies test match. Sydneysiders get another edition of Australia Day Live. Last year featured Dami Im, Christine Anu and Isaiah Firebrace.

Hopefully we get some free BBQs, free pool access and council fireworks too.

FWIW I reckon we should change the date and bring back the festivities - before 2020 Australia Day was pretty good. I reckon February 1st to celebrate Medicare's introduction and we could get an update on just how much the government of the day has screwed/improved the system in the last year.

    * I know that could absolutely sound like some sort of joke - it definitely is not - it absolutely happened.

I'm going to do the most Aussie thing and enjoy my day not at work.

    • spending the day drinking … right?

      • Nah. But I will be smoking a brisket and/or ribs

        • You gotta stay hydrated!

          But that sounds good

I will have my paid day off and enjoy time with the family.

And troll people with their dramas.
