Unauthorised Transactions through Guzman y Gomez Account. Useful Advice Welcome

Hi fellow ozbargainers

Last night, one order ($195) was placed through my Guzman account and payment was made through PayPal. I called my bank and they said I have to contact the merchant as they can't do anything.
While I was talking with the bank, another transaction of $78 was done. I immediately changed my PayPal account password and cancelled automatic payment for Guzman through PayPal.

After several calls, I talked with the Guzman store (Greenacres South Australia). They said orders are collected through drive through. There is nothing they can do. I told him I live in Seven hills New South Wales. How can you process with these transactions? The person on the call said this has happened before as well. I asked for head office contact. She didn't have it.

I disputed these transactions on PayPal as fraud. They said it is not a fraud as I have authorised automatic payment to GyG before in July 2022.

Do I have any options to get my hard earned money back?

Edit: talked with PayPal. They will dispute this transaction under goods not received and GyG has 10 days to respond. If GyG doesn't reply or provide proof then 11th day I will receive a refund

Edit: got an email from GyG head office. They have refunded the money in my account. Thanks all for your input. Have a good day.

You will get your money back by disputing your paypal transaction.

PayPal will see these are authorised transactions because there is a link to the G&G account. The issue is with G&G and with unauthorised access to this account somehow.

My bet is that OP uses the same email and password for a whole heap of different apps and someone just downloaded the combination and tried it on the G&G app and it was correct. This is either on OP having shit password security, or a breach of the G&G app, either way, it isnt a "PayPal" issue.

Now, it would be a PayPal issue if the PayPal account had been used through the app and that app was not registered to OP.

      • Paypal is very easy to deal with as long as you don't have history of regular disputes with them. Did once with pizza hut app I think and they returned my money.

        Agree.

It's an OP GYG account security issue not a PayPal issue and definitely not a bank issue.

        Guzman Gumaz

Lol. For all we know OP is possibly talking about Gazman.

Bit harsh. But yeah making such requests is normally counterproductive.

and this is why i never trust retailer apps with any stored payment methods or even log in info

    • The inconvenience of taking a little longer to pay is nothing compared to the inconvenience of having to chase up and dispute unauthorised transactions and the possible runaround you'll get from everyone.

Also: Use password managers, people! Do not reuse passwords!

I have had my points used before in the GYG app - when I spoke to GYG they told me it was my problem and I should change my password.

Clearly they have issues with their app - I don't trust it or most retailer apps anymore - security is floored AF.

  • If PayPal is part of the ombudsman scheme, take it there

Use two factor authentication on PayPal is my advice. Allowing storing payment details at a taco place is just overkill as well, unless it’s your main source of food.

Get a password manager and use 2fa everywhere.

Or just use sign in with apple.

Use two factor authentication on PayPal is my advice

Doesn't fix the OP issue, they authorised automatic payment to GyG. So no 2fa needed by the GyG app once this is done.

I have two factor authentication enabled, and the exact same thing that happened to OP happened to me this afternoon. PayPal security and customer service is a joke.

      • You linked your PayPal account to another service?

        • -1

          Yes.

          • -1

@aja12: Therein lies the problem then. If you've authorised a link between PayPal and another service, you've already been authenticated and authorised PayPal to deduct the money from your account. Simple and most secure solution is to not link PayPal to any account, period.

You can rule out the hamburglar as he’s not a fan of Mexican.

Really sorry to hear about this one; it's a tricky situation. If Guzman Gumaz won't come to the table, the only other option is to raise it with your bank as a chargeback (which will in turn get your paypal account banned/cancelled).

If it's any consolation, posting here has reminded everyone to log in to Paypal and remove any authorised billers.

    Thanks OP, it was delicious.

    • OP was talking about Guzman and Gomez?

      • +1

It was late at night and GYG was the only thing open.

  • Do I have any options to get my hard earned money back?

Speak to head office and see what they have to say. Otherwise bikies or media.

  • This is obviously fraud, the question is how did they gain access to your guzman account.

  • OP, same thing happened to me this afternoon. Changed passwords for Guzman app, PayPal. Removed linked bank account from PayPal. PayPal dispute was reviewed within the hour and deemed it was not authorised, case close. Lodged a dispute with PayPal.

(profanity) pathetic little low life scum.

    • *PayPal deemed it was UNauthorised
