  • Hi wahush, websites can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. To get you going, basically what you'd need is a domain name, web host & web pages. Some definitions below (ignore Javascript, PHP & CMS for basic sites):

    http://www.ehow.com/facts_5001883_what-needed-build-website.…

This is how they all come together: http://www.ehow.com/how_2048877_build-website.html

Setting up the domain name & host is relatively easy if you've got the time to do a bit of research & shopping. I've used Godaddy.com to register domain names before & they've been quite good, pretty sure they also provide hosting services.

If your friend is able to develop the actual pages then that's a good start. The gist of your website will be in the actual design of your web pages. Since it is a marketing tool & most clients would probably check out your site for info before contacting, you'd want to drive potential clients visiting the site to eventually make that call. What that means is giving a lot of thought into the design of the site, e.g. fonts, colours, layout, etc. as a frustrating site could deter a potential customer

  • If you're just after something simple then you could consider signing up to 'Google Apps'. It's completely free, you just need a domain name and a bit of technical jiggery-pokery to link them together.

It provides you with Gmail running on your own domain name (so you could have [email protected], say) as well as the other usual Google services AND a basic WYSIWYG website designer.

If you've got a bit of design flair (or your mate has) there's no reason you can't knock up a passable site on there in a couple of hours.

  • Any custom/bespoke website design under about $2000 is not expensive, but at that price they would only have some junior/intern spitting out the websites, and perhaps only derived from a template, ie., don't expect mind-blowing work. Also based on that company's portfolio, it's slightly broken website, and that they want to franchise their business out already, I would shop around some more.

A good company will insist to communicate with you throughout the process. Unless you can pay for their copy editing services, you will have to provide all the text for the website. You'll also need to provide logo's and usually images otherwise that's more design work, or purchasing of images at an extra cost.

In any case, I would advise not to get a friend to do the work, unless they themselves do this professionally or you have seen their work. It does take several years of actually thinking and creating websites before one will get an eye for good design. While at least some sort of website is usually better than nothing, an unfinished website especially with inaccurate information can hurt your business.

Remember the price also includes hosting and maintenance, often free for the first year. Honestly, be wary of any quote under $2500, unless they are a talented junior freelancer with an ABN/ACN (for tax purposes).

  • Could do it for you if you want at a cheaper price definitely, PM me for more info :).

  • You could use www.webs.com.
Using this you can create a free website that's easy to build and manage.

PM me to get list of great companies which can deliver awesome solution for half of mentioned price.

  • Themeforest has some great wordpress templates - http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress

I usually use them for basic sites. You can customise them significantly with just a basic understanding of php.

  • Try Webs.com or weebly.com to get started once you get good business from it you can proceed further with good budget.

  • Hey - if you want to try making your own website look at this page a friend of mine sent me - it's free, just sharing the goods! www.actsmartmedia.com/5daychallenge/

  • A few of my friend built their website using http://www.wix.com/ which I found quite good.

  • If you want a basic free drag and drop website I would recommend weebly.com
    Some nice templates as well.

  • Wordpress.org, find a nice template and make your own :)
That's how I made my portfolio site.

All you have to do is register a domain name, get a hosting server, and then download wordpress, and upload it onto the server via FileZilla or some other FTP program.

It all sounds very confusing, but I built my own site, with zero prior knowledge in a couple of weekends, with youtube videos and google-ing for info.
(I'm keeping in mind you did say basic.)

  • I can make you a website for $500 including hosting for 2 years if your interested. I can take care of everything. Message me if your interested.
