on regular paved roads not doing anything off track

Why do you need mountain bike. Road bikes would be cheaper!

A mountain bike for your use is unnecessary and would add a lot of weight. I bought my first bike with a similar frame of mind to yourself that I just 'wanted' a mountain bike with use just like yours. I ended up switching for a flat bar road bike or commuter bike and it is so much nicer and easier to ride.
If you do insist then maybe get a hard tail so you get some comfort advantages with front suspension. Otherwise based on the use you have outlined a mountain bike is a bad choice.

    • You cannot get a decent dual suspension bike for OPs budget.

      • Seeing as I said ‘hard tail’ and ‘front suspension’ your mention of dual suspension is completely redundant and makes it clear you didn’t actually read my comment before replying to it.
        Have a good weekend.

        • If you do insist then maybe get a hard tail

That implies that a dual suspension would be an alternative, and one that most people would expect of a mountain bike. A rigid mountain bike is not a thing unless you a weirdy beardy type that thinks more than one gear is redundant. Saying ‘go for a hardtail’ is redundant unless you are saying that to rule out a dually.

          • @Euphemistic: No it doesn’t. You’re reaching to justify your initial mistake.

@LanceVance: That’s OK. If I misread your post that’s on me. But if others have misread perhaps I’ve added some info they weren’t aware off. You sound like you know a bit about bikes, but lots of people don’t.

  • Unless you are travelling on hilly terrain then i would recommend a 3 speed step through bike with a basket.

Easier to ride - more upright /not hunched over. A basket for your stuff. Inexpensive

"commuting from home to do daily small errands or going to the gym from home on regular paved roads"
    "not doing anything off track"
"I dont want a hybrid bike."

    Hybrid bike is the answer.

Just like there's no point buying a 911 GT3 RS if you're only going to use it on the road.

From the needs you stated, a hybrid bike is your solution. Mountain bike is just extra grunt work.

It’s akin to having a large SUV for going to the shops and school drop off

Don't get a Mountain Bike, wrong bike for your intended use. It will be heavier and slower than a flat bar commuter.

See if you can pick up a Giant Cross City 2 or 3 flat bike, second hand. A new City Cross 3 is only $799 new.

A Polygon Path 2 Urban City Bike is $549 new.

Plus one for not a mountain bike.

I had a Giant Roam that was a good compromise. Reasonably robust and mountain bike looking bit really built for the road. Find something similar to
    The Roam.

Your budget isn’t great for a new bike but will get you a quite good second hand bike. The budget is really only entry level bike-shop-quality bikes.

Don’t forget to allow some budget for the fine avoidance hat (helmet).

Why TF would you need a mountain bike to go to the gym? Is the gym at the top of a mountain?
