Hunter Valley (NSW) - Wine Tasting

Visiting Hunter Valley and thinking to book some local wine tasting.

Eg : https://petersonhouse.com.au/
They have "Seated Wine Tasting" option for $15/person ( Enjoy a seated wine tasting experience at Peterson House. Choose five sparkling wines from our wine list. )

Could you recommend any specific Wine Tasting venue at Hunter Valley?
Also, is it better to go for paid wine tasting venue like above or any walk-in options available?
Appreciate your inputs. Thanks.

Lived in the hunter for a number of years, a few of my personal favorites:
    - Tyrrells (for premium)
    - Harkham
    - Vinden
    - Bimbadgen for alfresco pizza lunch, their wines are average

If you find yourself heading over towards Broke, check out Running Horse, Krinklewood and Greenway.

Tyrrell's and Binet Family wines in Polkobin were good from memory.

  • Good luck on finding walk in tastings (think McGuiguins still do it)
The whole business model has gone from wine tasting to try and sell wines to wine tasting experiences with no interest in selling wines.
Echo the above two posters, Tyrrells is good and also has gin flights.

  • go wherever tasting is free if you buy something

    • very rare to find a free one these days.

      • some are "Free" if you buy.
ie: the amount you paid for the tasing is deducted from your purchase of 24 bottles

        • purchase of 24 bottles

          🤣🤣🤣

        • Oh that is good, I don't set foot in a winery unless I am buying 6 dozen bottles anyway…

  • I loved Undercliff Wines near Wollombi, the town is great too. Very small and picturesque, off the beaten track.

  • Hunter Valley is three hours out of Sydney, just FYI.

lol. No it isn’t. I literally live not far from there and have family in the Upper Hunter (Muswellbrook area) and it wouldn’t be 3 hours from Cessnock to Sydney… Maybe 3 hours from Pokolbin to Campbelltown.

      • You taking Sydney's shit traffic into account?

Still not in Sydney though, which is the point I was making

      • Solid 2hrs on a good day.
Can easily add an hour or so on PHR or M1 depending on traffic.

Moot point after title edit anyway..

        • I was the one who got the title edited.

      • Okay 2 hours and 40 minutes, i am on lake mac close enough to Freemans drive and its like 50 minute from here going the back way to Hunter Valley. From the south eastern suburbs in Sydney (Maroubra) it takes me 1 hour and 45 minutes to get here without traffic.
