Need to Buy a Retractable Cat Gate for Rental

Hi All,

Need to order a cat gate/fence to stop my housemates cat from entering my room. I thought I could live with a cat, well I was wrong, my hay fever has been kicking up lately.

Now most of the time my door is closed, but when i want it open to let in the aircon, i don't want the cat to see that as an opportunity to get in. If i only leave the door slightly ajar, the cat just pushes open my door anyway.

Would require something that is retractable and is at least 1.5m high. Door is standard measurements - 2.1m x 0.8m
(No idea how high this cat can jump, only seen it jump to the counter so far)

Housemate hates that I spray their cat, even if it's just water, so they're willing to chip in to it as well.

TIA

I got something like this a few years ago from Target for about this price. Used it in the hallway to stop my dog from tearing up the house when we were out. Its simple enough to put up and take down. Only issue is the ends can rub bits of paint off the wall but easy enough to patch up. Best look at a kid gate over a pet gate as its similar thing but pet products are seriously marked up in price.
Edit: might not be tall enough as tbh my cats could leap it, but I would just spray it with a deterrent that made the cat avoid coming near it

Full length ones can be bought from Amazon/Ebay for about $150, otherwise I guess you could just invest in a fly screen door, might look a little odd though and being a rental idk if the landlord would like it

    • A cat would 100% squeeze between those bars or jump over it. Short of getting some extendable fly screen, I don't think there's anything to keep a cat from getting through a door. And it'd have to be a steel mesh screen, a cat would tear up a fabric one in seconds.

      • wish I could install a steel mesh but I don't wanna spend a lot of money on that, also a rental.

    • yeah the cat would jump over that. What deterrent did you use?

      • Smeared it in Vix vapor rub i think. Cats hate that.

  • Can't help but FYI, mums cat jumps the 1.7m fence no problem and it's an old cat. 1.5m is likely not going to stop it.

    • Dang - It's like I gotta get a screen door but not install it - just put it in place whenever i wanna leave my door open

      • Maybe this

I can't comment on the quality just seems like simliar to tent material.

Otherwise a full length gate but it would be inconvenient to take off and put on. Has a latch though so I would just leave it on

        • i'll look into this

          • @BLAIL: I agree about needing it to cover the whole opening. Our cat can easily jump over our 1.8m high fence.

If you install something, I would recommend that you get it in writing that your housemate will pay for any repairs that are needed if the screen causes some damage to the door frame etc. You don't want to get stuck with the bill from your landlord or have your landlord take some of the bond to pay for the repairs.

        • That looks like a great option. Will be like living in a tent, so OP can feel like they are on holiday as well

          • @dtc: Yeah the netting breaks so easily - had to get a refund.

  • Fly screen door?

  • +1

Have you tried having a conversation with your cat about their behaviour

    • the cat doesn't listen to its owner.

      • so why are you listening to the owner? keep spraying water. water gun is cheaper

  • What about those magnetic closing fly screens?

  • get a dog

  • Water pistol
