Portable Air Conditioner with Home Assistant Integration

Intended to purchase Choice subscription but appears quality gone downhill. - Is a Choice.com.au subscription worth it?

Rooms are 5 x 6m, concerned about power usage also considering medical issues affect by temperature/humidity, location is South Australia. Preferably something quiet (sensory issues) with home assistant integration (cognitive issues). Will consider quality product with just Wi-Fi App perhaps can emulate android VM accessible from HA tab, just cognitive issues struggle switch apps/devices at least can keep in HA.

Good to see recommendations from all price brackets.

  • I bought the 1600 BTU Arlec portable cooler from Bunnings, with the heating mode. Trying to cool a flat roofed room 4x9 meters. It struggles to lower temp just a few degrees. I've been sealing up all the air gaps I can find with masking tape. On paper 1600 BTU should be enough for a room that big but in reality it's not. If I run it the night before a hot day it makes it tolerable. Compared to the rest of the house it's comfortable, but still more than the 27 degrees my thermometer recommends as max temp. In South Australia too.

How hot does the room get? The room I'm trying to cool gets a few degrees hotter inside than it does outside, so if it's 33 outside then it'll probably be 35 in the room. It's also very loud, but it helps cover other household noise at least.

Comes with an app so I can turn it on when heading home from other side of the city at least. And when the sun finally goes down the house stays hot all night, but when the sun goes down then it starts actually working to chill the room (slowly).

A split system would work a bit better and be quieter, and be cheaper to run, though not portable if you move. But the power savings would pay for itself after 10 years I bet,

They're all inefficient. They draw air in from the room for the compressor which results in drawing more air into the room from warmer parts of the house.

Some units can be modified to use a second hose to draw air from outside the house for the compressor.

      • Two hose design doesn't seem to be available in Australia, except in industrial "portable" air conditioners. This house is going to be rubble in a year or so and no way my slumlord would pay for an efficient cooler. The owner seriously is counting on no expenses at all before he sells. I don't even have a door on my "room", which is actually a carport turned into an extension. But I've already got all my stuff setup here and moving is a pain.

Got no idea why either! If you do look closely at some units you can convert them back into a two hose job.

        • found this EcoFlow Wave two pipes design others recommending except eye watering $1500, budget capping out around $1000 (was aiming $700) already pushing it but am curious other thoughts on the ecoflow, the marketing at least appears to solve many of the issues discussed in this thread

          • @mantra: While Wave can cool most small to medium sized spaces, 8㎡ is optimal for fast cooling. That’s about the size of a four-man tent.

    • renting, house could be demolished in 2-5 (hopefully 3-6) years

rural property, warmest maybe 3-7pm sun on window planning velcro sheets of something to blackout room reflect sun

room likely professionally sealed off because my sensory issues

room maybe closer to 4 x 5m just footsteps guessing

house probably double bricked except windows large

i don't mind premium if high quality last 5 - 10 years as due to complexity of my disability might be moving around a lot

others helping me decide but cognitive issues make me indecisive cause nothing will exist to meet my needs way i want

Unfortunately this exact model doesn't seem to be available anymore, but I have it and am happy with it.

All the Kogan SmarterHome stuff is Tuya based, and works with Home Assistant. Cloud-based and local integration is possible.

Have you owned a HA-integrated portable A/C before? OK, now I see you've posted a list of wi-fi models.

    • considered IR blaster/receiver always exhaustion to grab tv remote but never thought they all that smart for air conditioning, will have to investigate these models, thank you

I spent $60 on an Aqara M2 hub. It can send IR to my A/C. Sadly not much company or community support available in english language.

        • I got a TUYA (WiFi) IR blaster for $5 from a previous deal, I used it with my Delongi ceramic heater.

I have one (Shinco 9000 BTU) which I got for $150 from FB marketplace, this is how it shows in HA with TUYA integration

I think device is similar to this one, but I have the TUYA WIFI version

  • Mate, as bad as it sounds don't waste any money on it. A portable one will neither be quiet nor effective how much you sugar coating it and those fancy home assistant will be useless. It will never reach a comfortable temperature for those home integration to work. Your best bet is to reduce room temperature from 35 to 30+ by running it constantly at very loud level.
you better get windows mounted one for twice as much effectiveness or split with 5 times more comfort (unlikely in your situation).
