LG Gram 15" or 16" LG Gram Laptop Need Help Deciding

I can't decide on whether to get the on sale 15" LG Gram or wait for a 16" one to go on sale.

I'll be using the PC for coding so I'll probably dual boot the OS and be running a VM. Will also use it for some LightRoom photo editing.

Here is the 15" one on sale for $1819 and also you get a $250 JB HiFi voucher as a bonus…. It has the standard 1920 resolution as opposed to the 16" which is 2560

The 16" one here which is $2899

Can you easily swap the HDD out for a 1TB one and do a drive copy? 512GB might not be enough for photo editing

Someone help me decide lol Thought??!!?!

Thanks!

    16" 15" meh, tiny difference. What's 1" between friends?

    $1000 difference, now that's something!
Once I got my NAS, i stopped caring about storage in individual computers. Local storage is "just a cache". So if i were you, meh 512GB, meh 1TB.
if you do photo editing, esp raw files, you probably already have a NAS with 10TB of storage too

higher res is only good if you use 100% dpi, if you scale it to 125 or 150% you're not going to see more letters on the screen. sure it'll look smoother, but you're not gonna see more code on your screen.

if you're doing photo editing, then you want the screen with better colour reproduction.
also, glossy screens suck, pick the one that isnt glossy - if its an option.
tricky for you though as you have an OLED glossy screen, or an IPS non-glossy. Tough one!

    • For sure, matte only for me I hate the glossy ones!

    • And yes I have a synology NAS :)

      • here's my top tip:
have a small computer plugged in via eth to your nas.
Use THAT as the photo editting computer. Remote desktop to it to do your photo editing.

That way your laptop is a thin client, edit stuff, set to export, and shut down and go to sleep; meanwhile the one attached to the nas has fast access and can stay awake exporting while the one at your desk, bed, hotel accom can go off

A USFF pc is probably good enough, or an old laptop

The price difference is a lot. Have you considered a second monitor? Either a desktop monitor or perhaps this

It's possible you could find a cheaper 16" and upgrade the screen yourself if you're really wanting 2560x1600

    • Have a second monitor but I travel a lot so hardly use it.

      • you can get portable second monitors too

        • For sure, I've seen them but I'm a bit of a minimalist :) Don't even use an external keyboard or mouse.

Yea I don't care about the resolution… thanks guys, think I'll just go with the 15" one πŸ€“πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

The LG Gram 15 has a larger battery capacity, which could be useful for running a VM. Both laptops have similar performance characteristics, with the LG Gram 15 having a slightly better system and application performance score based on some info I found.

Regarding storage, the LG Gram 15 has a 512GB SSD, which might not be enough for your photo editing needs. However, upgrading the SSD to a 1TB one is possible. Swapping out the SSD is relatively straightforward, and many online tutorials guide you. LG even has a helpful guide on how to do it if you've never done it before.

Ultimately, deciding between the two laptops depends on your preferences and priorities. The LG Gram 16 might be better if you value a higher-resolution display. However, if you prioritise battery life and the ability to run a VM, the LG Gram 15 might be the better option. Regardless of your chosen laptop, upgrading the SSD to a 1TB one is possible if you need more storage space.

Invest in a nice external monitor (or a couple) if you want better resolution.

Thanks mate! I think the verdict is unanimous, I'll buy the 15.6" πŸ€“πŸ‘ŒπŸ½

    • Are you sure the 15" has a larger battery capacity than the other? It says 60 WHr for 15" and 80 WHr for 16".
