Drill Extension Bits for Getting down Walls

I require some Drill Extension Bits for getting down walls (standard walls) and through studs for some cables.

Looking for recommendations. A heap of different options online from Bunnings, Total Tools and Sparky Direct.

What have people used? Recommended? Not looking at going over the top and would be used every now and then, not an everyday used item.

Unsure on whether to get a kit of 300mm bits that join together or dry to get one longish bit. My concern with bits joining together is them coming undone in the wall and losing the bit(s).

After good quality but not breaking the bank.

How long do you need? The ones you join together, assuming you buy the ones designed for what you're doing, have retaining grub screws which reduce the chance of it coming apart inside the wall. Single bit, I don't think I've ever seen longer than 900mm but 400mm is more common. Keep in mind if you're doing it from the roof space, you need whatever length above you in order to get everything in place.

Hope you're installing speaker cables or something you don't need to be licenced for.

Not sure, just dealing with a Standard wall height.

900mm I think would be pretty. I will have a look.

Yeah, I have a fair bit of space in the roof so I should be alright. But yes, the joining together might also be helpful and easier to move around with.

Yeah sure, let's say I am running speaker cables.

    Through noggins.

And have you checked they arent sideways and you may have space to pass cables down already.
Two holes in the top plate and a torch might get you that answer.

      Yes I have checked.

At a previous house I just cut out a small section of plaster in front of the noggin, cut a notch in the noggin, ran the cables through and replastered. I had to repaint the whole wall anyway so paint was not an issue.

          This is the way.

Piss easy job to do a small plaster patch.

Way less stuffing around and not having to curse when you can't get it in the hole.

  • If your ceiling height is 2400mm, you may have just a single noggin at 1200mm; best to check first with a stud finder.

    • That would sound about right.

  • I use a 32mm speed auger bit that has the locking notch in the shank
    https://www.bunnings.com.au/irwin-32mm-speedbor-max-auger-bi…

I then use 400mm Ryobi brand extension bars but it looks like Bunnings no longer sell these. They have the quick lock connection to connect to the auger bit.
3 extension bits was enough to get speaker cables from the ceiling, near enough to the floor (only had to go through 2 noggins).
The the locking connections, haven't lost a bit yet (knock on wood)

I highly recommend running the 32mm drill bit then running 25mm (or 28, can't remember) conduit down the wall. Makes pulling cables in the future much easier.

    • Thank you! I like the conduit idea!
