Can I Earn Velocity Points/Status Credits if I Need to Use Krisflyer Points to Upgrade My Ticket?

Hello there, I am planning a trip from Melbourne to Europe via Singapore Airlines and since the flights are so long, I'm thinking its worth while to upgrade/redeem myself to either business or Premium economy. I am collecting velocity points as my main source, and would love to earn more during this trip if possible; less preferred to earn KrisFlyer since it expires in 3 years and I don't think I can earn enough of it to ultilise it.

Tho I do not have enough points for a full return trip in total comfort, what do you think the options would be the best?

  1. Redeem velocity one way, and buy economy the other?
    • I've checked I would be paying very little on the way there, but the economy ticket back is ex af (the sum would be same prices as a normal return economy ticket)
  2. Convert to KrisFlyer and upgrade from base ticket
    • However this means I cannot earn velocity since I will need to be signed into my KrisFlyer account? Is there a way to book it via my Velocity account, and use Krisflyer to upgrade?
  3. Just buy a normal return ticket and earn points
    • cheapest to buy return

Would like to hear your opinion in this case, thanks!

    1. Buy two tickets, one return to Singapore. One Singapore to Europe using velocity points.
    • oo I will have a little research here, does this mean I will need to check in baggage myself during the layover?

      • Correct. I would personally do a 24hr stopover to give yourself heaps of leeway in case anything goes wrong with the first flight.

Yes, I’d stop over in Singapore have some local food a swim and a good night sleep to break up the trip.

Doesn’t have to be Singapore either, it could be KUL BKK CGK, MNL it’s really about getting a cheap flight out of Australia. Then what ever combination points you can get to Europe and back in premium cabin.

Don't do #2. Apart from being difficult to upgrade (you need reward availability usually), it also costs not much less than redeeming that same PE/Business seat outright.

Stewardo's suggestion above is reasonable, just allow ample connecting time between flights.

Unless you buy the business class ticket upfront the likelihood of your economy ticket being upgraded to business via the bidding/offer process is slim to none. You'll need to be top tier oneworld or platinum to even get a look it.
