Australian vs. New Zealand Passport

Is there any benefit for a new Australian citizen with a New Zealand passport in applying for an Australian passport?

  • Dual nationals have the right to hold a passport from both countries, and get the full benefits of citizenship such as social security payments, health care, and voting rights.

NZ passport is a lot cheaper. NZD206 vs AUD373. I would stick with the NZ passport.

It is still $346 for an adult passport. They will go up to $373 on July 1st.

I paid for my new one last week.

    • It took me way too long but I think the New Zealand passport will get you into Chile much cheaper.

From my reading, it seems like Chile was toying with dropping the high fees for Australian travellers back in 2020 but now they're back at around $170.

For New Zealanders, it sounds like it doesn't cost a cent to visit Chile for 90 days or less.

This is a bargain we don't find on these pages.
NZ should introduce a nice little side hustle offering passports to Au citizens, would be a good little earner for them. A little competition for the rest of us is always nice.

Regarding the access to countries without a visa, the NZ passport is "more powerful" than the Australian one.

As a dual citizen, with a New Zealand passport only, residing in Australia, I was never able to get an electronic international COVID vaccination certificate from the AU government. I think it was coz I don't have the right kind of visa (being dual) that was linkable to my AU health record. Probably not an issue anymore.

At the border, AU immigration can get a little spicy if you tell them you are also an AU citizen especially after they have processed you using your NZ passport. Or just use the smartgate.

AU immigration typically use the word "should" when talking about dual citizens using their Australian passport when moving across the border.

I've avoided the expense of an AU passport for 20 years with no negative impact.

    • If you travel and only have a NZ passport, always remember not to tick Aus Citizen on your arrivals card. Immigration try to tell you that you have to travel on a Aus passport back to Australia if you're a citizen which isn't true.

    • NZ citizens living in Australia are eligible for a green medicare card. My Australian vaccinations are linked to my Medicare card.

Hardlyworkin: Is that true? As an Australian citizen, traveling on your NZ passport would not give you a visa that you can enter the country on. You are not eligible for SCV if you are an Australian citizen. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/getting-a-visa/visa-li…

Now that you are an Australian citizen, you can no longer call them jandals or chilly bins

    • I thought it was sheep…… Illegal to do that is OZ.

IF you can a afford both then keep both. The US loves the Rainbow Warrier citizens, but the Iranians like the white feather's better then the skippy cousins.

Some conutiries prefer one over the other, but overall

The NZ passport looks better than the Aus passport (even the new one) IMO. Something else to consider.
