Cast iron cookingware

Anybody use any? Investigating buying some cast iron stuff instead of using teflon etc etc. Does anyone know where to get them for a good price in Sydney? I've had a look at victoria's basement, seems reasonable prices actually - just wondering are there any other resources?

  • I was in the same boat, not wanting to use non stick that never lasts, after a lot of research i went for De Buyer, great pans on a budget. Cheaper and better made than the so called non stick pans. make sure you clean after use with hot soapy water and dry well, wipe with a little oil, done (don't leave them submerged in water in the sink for to long) Reviews below.

other online retailers sell them, Everton is just an example.

  • For just plain cast iron try a camping goods store. eg. BCF. You can get cast iron frypans of all sizes around $10-$20. I have quite a few of these pieces as I like cooking with cast iron. You can sometimes buy things that look like round little muffin pans in cast iron too - they are amazing - cook little cakes in about 2 minutes. Google a recipe for gem iron cakes.

If you want the enamel coasted cast iron (usually white on the inside and colour on the outside) and cheap.. then the cheapest is to wait for them to be in stock at Aldi (they stock them a few times a year). I have the Aldi french pan (Crofton is the brand name) and I love it, only problem with it is that the knob part of the lids keeps getting loose and I always have to tighten it (almost daily). But it's lovely to use and putting it in the oven from the stovetop is great.

Other than that, Kmart has a few cast iron pieces aswell, only red and not very nice.

I'm in Brisbane and have had a pretty good look around heaps of kitchen goods stores and haven't been able to find any other sources. I do want a smaller french pan in white.. but have had no luck finding one.

  • Cast iron is great if looked after properly, and it's not difficult to do so.

If you're after enamelled cast iron, and are willing to spend a bit (quite a lot really), you can't go too wrong with Le Creuset, especially with their lifetime warranty. Not only are their products well made, but their service (at least in my experience) is fantastic. It does come at a cost though, although I justified this by considering it's a lifetime purchase.

There are many cheaper alternatives too, this is OzBargain afterall, and I'm sure many of them are also very good. Either way, I'd definitely give cast iron a go.

    • I bought the 28cm Round Le Creuset off Amazon earlier this year for $100 delivered. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Le-Creuset-Round-Casserole-Granite/d…

They tried to pull a bait and switch on me and not honour it but after several strongly worded emails they eventually did. It is great but be prepared for the gas bills if you use it often lol.

  • +1

aldi occasionally have enamel cast iron cookingware.

harris scarfe also stock it and at a reasonable price.

I have no idea of quality.

  • ok thanks guys, great suggestions.

my budget is rather small - and also, would cast iron be pointless on electric stovetop (induction)? I hate it but that's the stove my gf has at her place.

Cast iron is great on gas, induction, and electric elements. I've used it on all three. Can't really go wrong there. :)

  • The Aldi is stuff is good and cheap, so worth waiting if you are in no rush
