Recommendations: Cruise 1 Day in Darwin

Our family with school kids are cruising to Darwin and will just stay one day (9am - 6pm) in Darwin. We plan to visit Crocosaurus Cove and Museum and Art Gallery of the NT. Do you have any other recommendations in the city? We plan to take bus around City when possible with Taxi as a back up plan, is this a good idea? Is there any safety concern in the Darwin city during the day time? Thanks all in advance.

When you visit the museum make sure you do the Cyclone Tracy experience, in a blacked-out room with the cyclone howling outside. Gives a glimpse of what it was like to live through a cyclone. There used to be live sessions too where people who lived through it would talk about the experience.

The Darwin Military Museum is also worthwhile - there's quite a lot about the defence of Darwin from the Japanese bombers during the second world war.

      Done that…

    • Thank you for your insights. We will go to the Military Museum if time allows. Do we need to worry about safety in Darwin City area?

Safety is fine. The locals may come and ask for a dollar but as long as you are respectful, it is okay. Even better, don't make eye contact.

Lived there over 5 years. Not as bad as the media portrays, particularly during the day

        • Thank you.

      Agreed Military Museum.

Also swing past the RFDS Museum - the virtual displays are excellent.

    Not really… Darwin is boring…

The Northern Territory Library (not the city library) is pretty good.

Get there by walking thru bicentennial park.

    • The Northern Territory Library is pretty good.

How will they return the books though?

      • It's great for a visit.

You can read the Times while looking out through windows onto Darwin Harbour.

        Magic.

There's the wave pool and lagoon at the waterfront or Leanyer waterpark or Lake Alexander if your kids are keen for waterplay. Several markets on the weekends. Crocodylus Park (different from Crocosaurus Cove). Fish Feeding at Doctors Gully. Walk along Nightcliff Foreshore. Easy Point, Charles Darwin National Park and Lee Point Beach have some short bushwalking trails. There's a hop on hop off double decker tourist bus. No real safety concerns to speak of. The Esplanade has a pretty good playground.
