I just started looking into ice cream makers — I've been making them on the blender, with banana base and milk/cream or water depending on flavour — and noticed this is the highest rated by the New York Times and serious eats.

I know this one doesn't have a compressor, like Aldi's, but we have a chest freezer, and thought we can just store the bowl there (no?).

Bought an ice cream maker ages ago…used it twice and decided it was just easier to buy a $5 tub of ice cream instead. It’s good if you want to try make your own customised flavours. 😅

I'd rather know what I'm feeding the kid. We're all for being thrifty here, just not for paying with our health.

First kid? They’ll be eating dirt and bugs in preschool. 😃

        • And as adults we go back to that but pay a fortune to have "soil" served as part of some fancy dessert lol

        • Dirt is super healthy; full of probiotics (not to mention iron). It's the fake food coming out of labs and factories that is a problem.

    • How much do you get for a $5 tub now days?

  • It's only really an investment if you have a lot of kids… or if you want to go to heaven ASAP. :D

Otherwise.. check other ozdeal, $6 Connoisseur Ice Creams @ Coles!!

Water, Glucose Syrup, Sugar, Wheat Flour, Vegetable Oil, High Fructose Syrup, Invert Sugar, Wheat Starch…

      Noooo, thanks.

  • I was gifted this exact machine with two bowls. I used it precisely once and never again. Only managed to get $20 for it on Gumtree even though it was brand new.

Not withstanding all that, it worked well!

It WAS brand new. Before you used it. Not sure what you expect..

bought one for $25 a couple of months ago.

Maybe it is doing the rounds.

I have a Cusinart one with the freezer bowls and have used it on and off for about 10 years. If you are going to spend the cash, I would highly recommend getting one with a compressor. The freezer bowl takes up a lot of space and it has to freeze for 24 hours basically prior to making ice cream. This is fine if you have it in the freezer all the time, but if you want to make a second flavour, you have to freeze it again for 24 hours before you can do another. It's also extremely messy as a lot of the ice cream freezes to the sides of the bowl when you churn in.

The only reason I havent levelled up to a better model is that I will get too fat and that to make a really premium ice cream (high fat cream, milk, other flavours) will cost you more than $15-20 in ingredients.

We have something similar and use ours a bit. Works well.

Ice cream makers are great, you won't make your money back in a year (well depends how much you can eat). In my household the kids make their own ice cream, minimal number and wholesome ingredients. Gets them doing something IRL rather than roblox.

I'm keen to try the low calorie high protein Taro ice cream I prepared yesterday.

    • Recipe, pls?

I've got a ninja creami, normally kids follow the gelato recipes at the back.

For the Taro, I winged it haha, used Amino Z Taro Ice Cream flavour WPC (from the last 5 pack deal here) and used just a teaspoon of monk fruit sweetener.. which I may not have needed. I'll know tonight when I churn and adjust for next time. Could be lower calorie if i switch the full cream milk for skim, but also worried ill lose the creamy texture.. ill keep trying to find the lowest cal point for texure and flavour

          Count carbs, not calories.

          Thanks.

          • @wisdomtooth: Disagree, carbs are not an enemy. Count all macros, calculate calories based on BMR, exercise and goals. Fat per gram has 4x more energy… but fat is flavour.. :(

            • -1

@serbpie: But fat — animal fat, not seed oils — is nutritious and satiating. Carbs are neither, and keep us continually hungry (as plants, not animals, have evolved to have us eat them more and more). Weight mgt is not waste mgt; it's not about input-output. It's about burn rate. Carbs burn like straw, fat burns like logs; you don't need to go on feeding the fire to keep it up.

I know that Ninja Creami is way more expensive compared to this, but is a much better ice cream maker in my view I have a Breville with a compressor and I used it a bit, but it's just too much hassle to clean and use in general.

Creami is so much easier. I've been using it several times a week for about 1.5 years and still use it.

Downsides of Creami is that it is expensive, and some people don't like that you have to prepare it overnight (which I don't find a hassle at all). But if you use an ice cream maker with a bowl, you'll have to prepare that bowl, similar to the Creami anyway.

Love the creami. Usually prepare about 6 + tubs of different flavours at a time. Each pint makes about 3 or 4 serves. Then I just pull out whatever takes my fancy and it's ready to eat about 3 minutes later.
Keep a selection of healthy and unhealthy choices ready to spin in the freezer.
A 2 litre bottle milk , 300 ml carton of cream, some sweetener or sugar and various fruits , protein powders or flavours is all you need for about 6-8 pints.
