USA Car Hire - TURO - Liability Insurance Supplement (LIS)

Hello,

I am looking to hire a few different cars through TURO on an upcoming trip to the USA. I have hired before on previous trips through the major rental companies and have always been able to opt into a Liability Insurance Supplement (Cover for damage or injury to a third party).

Unfortunately, TURO's insurance options only offer the mandated minimum liability insurance cover for the state in which the hire commences. In most cases this cover only amounts to somewhere between $25,000-$50,000 which, in the land of litigation and crazy medical bills, could quickly become insufficient in the event of an at fault accident.

Most travel insurance policies exclude car accidents from their Liability benefit…

Does anyone who has used TURO in the USA have any advice surrounding this issue?

I looked at Turo a few years ago and gave up because the listed prices look good until you click through and they double or sometimes triple.

It's just less hassle to go through a regular hire company.

    • Yeh, See the prices i am getting are much better and with a huge variety of great options.

      • You want to throw some examples up? I was in LA so I imagine Cali law and taxes played their part.

Looked into Turo and similar to yourself, reached the conclusion the coverage just wasn't worth the risk. Rent from a regular car hire kiosk instead.

Use travel insurance to cover any excess or get a quote from https://www.rentalcover.com and ignore it for 3 days to get 50% off e-mail offer. They paid out for a blown tyre previously which was worthwhile in my case.

    • Thanks for the input.

Interesting you mention rentalcover.com. They actually offer a LIS that I am looking at as a potential option for the TURO rentals.

      See: https://www.rentalcover.com/en/help/about-your-cover/66

I don't like that they are not contactable via phone and their policy wording and FAQs are vague too which concerns me…

  • Are you worried about a civil judgement in the USA? Just never return!

    • Did you read the OP?

    • This does not relate to LIS unfortunately.

Just an anecdote of my one and only renting in USA - I rented Hertz, LA to Chicago over like 3 weeks - I had to dig but found a managers special for like 400ish USD bolted on the insurance all up walked away less than 600AUD unlimited miles for the total. I ended up pumping 7k+ miles in the end went through several states, snow and a tornado did around 40mpg the car was rock solid with lane assist etc. Also the managers special gave a choice between a late model Sonata or late model Altima, I chose the Sonata and was certainly happy with this outcome, nothing wrong with altima's just wasn't 100% on the fly if they were the maxima's equivilent and knew Sonata's well enough. The managers special was tricky to find I had to keep filtering and changing drop off and pickups until it appeared only after refreshing but not on initial searches. Will def. do that again for less than 200AUD a week. Fuel was insane in March/ April 2022 though nearly 7-8 USD a gallon in the west down to around 4ish in the mid-west. G' luck

I used Turo last july when we went to the states for 2 weeks.

Do you mind answering OP's question then? Did you get LIS insurance

    • Did you risk not having LIS or did you come up with an alternative?

I risked not having the LIS

I used Turo 5 years ago for 3 weeks on the west coast

Turo is not a car rental company.

Turo is a car sharing company.

most insurance policies do not cover car sharing, only car rental.

Here is a link to Turo's Protection plans /"insurance"

    • I understandd the TURO options. If you reread my post you will see I am asking about LIS specifically.
