Qantas Ticket Cancellation

I bought return flights from NZ to Melbourne last year to see the F1 but recent events (medical reasons) means we might not be able to go.
I bought sale tickets as they were the cheapest and didn't expect to be cancelling them as I've wanted to see the F1 for years, and as I understand it sale tickets are non-refundable (fair enough).
But I see its possible to upgrade my tickets to say the the flex type for some extra $, am I missing something or could I just upgrade our tickets to flex then cancel for a refund?

For support from Ozbargain, you'll need at least platinum level membership.

Sounds like a loop hole a lot of people would like to use. So read the T&C very closely before you do it.

  • Usually you can't refund but you can change the dates for a change fee plus any fare price differences. It'll be listed in the rules for your fare.

Time to plan another trip when your medical issues subside!

  • Maybe try you credit card travel insurance?

Think the downvote was harsh. This is international travel - so unlike my travel issue - is likely to be covered if bought with the right card.

Somebody absolutely loving the downvotes today. Well let this be your downvote honeypot! 😁

I have to be honest, I've never seen that. It is possible to upgrade tickets to business class and, separate fact, cancellation of paid business tickets (not upgraded tickets) are free. However if the upgrade is a classic upgrade rewards ticket I believe cancellation cost is 5,000pts and the non-refundable part of the base ticket is not refunded. Alternatively there is a Bid Now Upgrade, cancelling of which once confirmed costs the full bid amount and the non-refundable part of the base ticket price.

    So some tips:

    1. If you're 100% sure you can do this, just do it and don't talk about it too much until you get the money back - as JimmyF said this would be pretty popular loophole.
    2. Qantas does trial new offerings from time-to-time, so maybe you got very lucky.
    3. One reason you might be able to do it is that you've booked through a booking/travel agent and Qantas deals with those agents different. I could be wrong but I have a weird if the travel agent makes a booking mistake, they aren't charged the same as you and I because they're booking a lot more flights with an airline than you and I.
    4. New Zealand (it's just been endless praise for me for New Zealand recently) is different and although both are still behind most of the world, New Zealand rights are slightly better although not in your specific circumstance.
    5. People have got their government charges back.
    6. Even sale fares have cancellation fees and though high they are usually less than the fare.

I just went on Australian radio regarding my Australian flight issue and was told "good luck" but you may only get fifty bucks back. ChoiceCheapies may have more New Zealanders with Qantas experience.

No, this won't work. When you upgrade a ticket (or "budle of rights" as Qantas calls them), the new ticket is subject to the original ticket's conditions of carriage.

You should be able to cancel the flights and recieve a flight credit, minus a relatively small cancellation fee.

    • new ticket is subject to the original ticket's conditions of carriage

Huh? What did you get by upgrading?

      • If you upgrade to business class you get a better seat, but a non-refundable ticket will not become refundable. Otherwise, if you stay in economy, you get nothing. So don't do it.
