FAVI - the $50 Android Jelly Bean HDMI stick

Looking forward to this being available in Australia. Only $50 and you can turn any TV into a smart TV. I know there are similar things out there already like the Roku Streaming Stick but for the specs and price this thing looks to be a significant step forward.

You should probably compare it with other mini PC on a stick:

So this is not significant step forward in terms of specs and price.

    • hi scotty

pardon me if i am asking a silly question.
do these sticks allow you to stream contents from the laptop to the tv ? like what you see on your laptop screen directly onto the tv ?

      • Stream content — do you mean something like streaming video from UPnP server or Windows Media Player? Or a VNC viewer allowing you to control your laptop over wireless network?

Both should be possible. Plenty of apps on Google Play.

      • yeah..e.g. use the app called Jump Desktop

  • Specs don't look that great as compared to the ones scotty has listed above. MK808 is better, and worth spending 10 bucks more.

Here are the specs from Favi website :

    Resolution: 720P, 1080P (HDMI)
    Microprocessor: ARM Cortex-A9 @ 1.0 Ghz
    RAM: 1GB DDR3 SDRam
    Built-in WiFi: 802.11 b/g/n
    Storage: 4GB
    USB Port: 2.0
    Mini USB: DC Input,
    Micro SD: Up to 32GB
    Remote Control: Infrared
    Dimensions: 3.6" x 1.3" x 0.6"
    Weight: 0.08 lb.

  • I have two different versions of these kind of hdmi-android-sticks and I'm not really that impressed with either..
    (1) The wifi is really flaky, doesn't manage to stream stuff well, so you need to put it on a micro-sd card instead.
    (2) The Chinese manufacturers implemented video decoding via a proprietary library, rather than through the standard Android mechanisms. So you couldn't do video decoding in just any software, you have to use theirs, which isn't that great, and reduces the usefulness of the device a lot.
    (3) You can get third-party ROMs (Cyanogen, Linaro, etc) but none of them support video decoding or 3D accel at all, which makes them kinda useless.

You're better off buying a Raspberry Pi — and they're cheaper too, $38 or so from element14 at the moment I think?

    • Never had any problems with Video decoding…Use MXPlayer….
