Health Insurance - Buy Extra Cover and Claim on The Same Day?

Hi guys,

I was with Medibank with Top Extras 90 where I have already served my waiting period. Made a silly mistake by changing to AIA and discovered that the dental procedure was only claimable at 60%. Just wondering if I can buy a new extra coverage today and still claim with under my new health insurance (For extras only)?

You know who would know the answer to this?

    Your health provider

    • unfortunately they're closed now :(

Will probably opt for Medibank again given that they allow me to transfer back within 90 days./

      • Tbh the answer will probably be no anyway.

Thre will be some sort of waiting period or clause to prevent it

  • Try and let us know

They usually have waiting periods just to prevent people from doing this..

If you move to another insurer at a similar level of coverage then there's no waiting period. If there's a higher level of coverage you'll have to serve a new waiting period.
As for 60% rebate, even if you go back to Medibank they'll only pay a percentage even within their preferred provider network anyway. 60% is roughly the norm for most insurers.

    • They also share details between insurers of what you've already claimed in that year, to stop you (in their eyes) double dipping.

So if you have already claimed $500 on dental from your first policy, that will be deducted from the annual limit on the next policy.

  • Thanks guys.

Yes my dental limit is currently $0 for this year. Just that I downgraded to a cheaper extras at AIA and realised my extras is capped at 60% with AIA while Medibank covers 90%.

Just signed up on the same Medibank extras (same as the previous one I had) so no waiting period (with 60 days since I left Medibank) hopefully I can claim the expenses I incurred yesterday

    • You shouldn't be able to claim the extras you incurred yesterday and Medibank will only pay 90% rebates at their preferred providers, everyone else is fixed at a set amount which is a whole different story…..
