Thinking of Selling My Retro Games (a Lot) - Where and How?

I have been a gamer my whole life and have a bunch of retro games/hardware sitting untouched for years. I don't have the patience to unload one by one, checking prices, posting on marketplaces trying to maximize every sale. At the same time, I'd want a fair price.

Are there any specific stores (Preferably in Victoria) that offer fair prices on retro gaming? Is their even a decent market for this stuff right now?

At some point, you'll regret it. Even if it's sit there for years, if you get rid of it now, in a few years time you'll be "I wish I'd never gotten rid of that".

Trust me. Specially as you get older.

Cash converters or sell as a bulk lot on marketplace. Resellers would be all over that. Expect a low price for all of it though, because they're the ones doing all the work

You won't get a fair price if you plan on unloading it without research.

Maybe a better one if you joined some Facebook groups and sold in bulk to a collector, but you'd be taking a fairly hefty cut even if you did that.

No way you should sell to Cash Converters or a store, you'll get utterly ripped off.

    IMO

You don't have to maximize every sale. Just figure out the expensive stuff and list it on one of the many retro gaming Facebook groups. If you sell it for 80%ish of the value you'll sell stuff within minutes to hours.

If you wanna be lazy post a few pictures of your collection and the stuff people message you about will mostly be the valuable stuff people will be trying to score a deal on.

I have done this recently. Its been a slow, steady process. No store will give you good value, they will probably want to on sell for twice what they pay you.

Just do it in stages e.g. By system or genre, and yeah, make sure you check the values. Bundling together can help. Sell on Marketplace/Gumtree, and don't feel bad about not getting the ebay price, because you aren't paying fees, and don't nerd to worry about Paypal buyer protection.

In my experience, big ticket items are harder to sell, because there are just fewer people with that kind of money to spend on classics.

  • If in good condition and sought after (i.e. Nintendo gear) then ebay is your best bet to get decent prices. If not so good condition, I'd go marketplace either as a big single set or create a few smaller bundles. Also, do some research on recent sold prices to give yourself an idea on what to ask / expect. Or post a pic of what you have and I'm sure a few of us will offer you a perspective. :)

  • I vote keep it. Times change and I regret getting rid of a lot of stuff. If you sell your stuff cheap and lazy, you will always be annoyed when you see a single game sell for what you were paid for a box full.
If you really want to sell take a dozen pictures and post to a retro site on Reddit asking for offers and see what you get.

    • I kept all my old game boxes and Manuels and inserts and stuff in mint condition for so long, but then decided I needed to declutter so sold some for pennies on the dollar to Gametraders and threw the rest away. Today I realise people would have paid big for them, but live and learn. I had my stuff stored poorly somewhere anyway and rats would have eaten all the cardboard in any case.

Thinking of selling my retro games (a lot)

If thinking of selling your games is consuming most of your thinking time then I suggest you sell them so you can focus on other things.

  • What are we talking about?

Consoles such as Nintendo, Sega, Xbox and PS - better off selling yourself
Older computers - Commodore, Atari etc do ok through Auction houses.
Rarer items such as Vectrex, Sega, Spectrum etc either yourself or find a specific auction to sell through not weekly ones. These do sell ok on FB, just dont lowball yourself and decide if youll ship beforehand.

Obviously there are clubs and magazines etc but dont assume collectors go through these. I have a collection and i hate clubs.

Sell all the games and buy flashcarts and console mods so you can have all the retro games.

  • Starboard Games in Melton stock and buy a lot of retro stuff.

  • I'd check each game / system to see what they're actually worth (some games are upwards of $200). If you've got any gems hold on to those or sell those ones individually, at least.
