Luggage for Domestic Pilots in Australia

G'day, are there any airline pilots flying in domestically in Australia that could please shed some light on what they use for luggage while working?

Snagged my first job in the right seat of a jet and wanted to start looking at options. Are there enough overnights to justify a roller bag or is a carry bag sufficient?

I know Briggs & Riley and LuggageWorks are popular brands but appear to only be available in the US.

Cheers and clear skies!

        Garbage bag?

      • The 99c ones do.

      • The Butcher ones usually come in black.

My fresh meats and Boocooks quality meats have flown all around the world.

    • They haven't had those for a while now!

Briggs and Riley is a lot to drop on a bag no one will see and will take a beating. Sure, there's the wnk factor but wait until you are next in Singapore or Tokyo and grab something there.

I would go for something practical, hard wearing and subtle.

Have you checked with your employer about any expectations? Colour, size etc

Do you know what routes youll be flying yet? Thatll likely also determine factors. Although, they try hard not to park planes in rural locales overnight.

Get the boxy case on wheels that looks like you might also fix photocopiers!

    • to complete the printer maintenance look, you have to mumble to yourself randomly, have BO and argue with randoms how Lexmark knew what they were doing before IBM bought them

you've either worked with techs, or managed a fleet of copiers before :D

        • how'd you guess? :D

  • I imagine suitcases are a tax deduction for your job right?

  • I don't have this one since I'm not a pilot, but do have check-in and cabin items.

They are fantastic. It hurts the first time you travel with the check-in item and it gets all scratched and dented. But after a few trips it doesn't matter anymore.

I thought the Airline would have provided this to all Pilots?
No need to maintain corporate image?

The Air Steward and Stewardess seem to have the same types each time they march to the Aircraft….

  • I’ll ask one of the pilots tonight at work….

    • first rule of pilot club
dont ask pilot about the gear they use

Nah I’m a freight guy so I’ll just ask when I hand ‘em the paperwork.

Everyone already knows they use landing gear.

  • Put everything in your pockets

I'm slightly surprised that you slipped straight into a 1st/2nd Officer turbojet seat without previous commercial experience (a job that requires a pilot bag).

My Goddaughters husband has been 5+ years commercial on SAAB 340s and has been a Captain and training officer for several years and has only just been given the nod to go to 737s.

I've flown 2+ million miles bum-in-seat over the last 17 years, (as a salaryman, not a pilot).

This bag has lasted the entire journey without any repairs. The rubber around the handle is ungluing, but that's reasonable given its life.

thats a pretty solid reccomendation based on your bag's life!

I bought the Montblanc night flight cabin bag 55, which is perfect for carry-on luggage mine is years old and looks brand new, cost about $1200.

  • pick up something from council collection, people chuck out carry on size bags all the time.

Rinse and repeat when its broken

reuse and recycle, being a pilot you wont have people chucking your stuff around since its carry on, my guess is the telescopic handle will go first, then wheels will be the next weakest link in your situation

    • I did just that with an amazing but grubby looking Samsonite carry on.

I used it to carry expensive camera gear abroad, nobody ever thought anything of it as it looked like it was full of soiled underwear.

The only thing that broke was the top carry handle. The plastic basically broke down, went all brittle, change colour and disintegrated.

I still have it. I love that bag. That was from a council pick up around Willoughby in Sydney.
