Suggest a SUV up to around $25,000

Hello, we are also wanting to get a used SUV. 7 seats would be nice but not a deal breaker. Ideally diesel.

What year onwards would you suggest? Will be checking out the car yards. Anything I need to consider before going there?

Is 2018 getting a bit long in the tooth? What kms should I consider too many?

Will be using it for city driving and country trips a few times a year.

Able to spend around the $25,000ish mark.

Will add more info if requested as I don't know what more to add.

Your budget is going to be the biggest limiting factor here.

Edit - oh, it's angywoo, that was a waste of a post.

    • +10

Ahaha, I had to look it up and remember the BBQ post.

7 seater SUV, in diesel, for city driving. It ticks all the boxes for sensibility :D

  • -1

    mazda cx 9

    • -1

      Doesn’t come in diesel.

      • +4

        OP said ideally diesel

        • Diesel is bad for climate change.

          • +1

@jv: Don’t you mean alleged climate change.

      • Mazda CX-8 then…
(may not be a 7-seater option there but…)

  • LDV SUV (used obviously). They sell a 7 seater model.

  • Country trips? You need a Prado.

    • +2

I would that thought at least a 300 series cruiser.

      • +4

Yeah, but i recognise the OPs budget wuold only extend to the front bumper of a 300.

        • Budget is what I am willing to spend. Can go higher - cash

          • +2

            @angywoo: Get a 300 series Sahara then.

            • +8

@brendanm: 300 series Sahara with muddies, lift kit and snorkel would be capable of daily school runs and the occasional Woolies carpark mission.

    • Prado thats what my other half is saying…I think it might be a bit too big (as in grunty) as an every day car. I have never driven one though.

We had a '22 carnival in QLD when we were there and I loved it so maybe a Prado might be worth a look.

We had a '22 carnival in QLD when we were there and I loved it so maybe a Prado might be worth a look.

        Does not compute.

        • would they be about the same length…

It is the Prado height I would need to check

      • what do you think a 7 seater SUV is, if you think a prado is too big.

        • the height and length of the prado will need to be checked….

I'd go Haval h6 (not diesel unfortunately)

    • Haval spelled backwards is Lavah

      • The pictures look tempting

    • +1

      What year?

They don't seem to hold their value…?

      • Avoid anything older than 2023 model as cruise doesn’t work properly due to smart cornering being unable to be disabled.

    • Is the engine made by Toyota or Great Wall?

      • +6

McLaren makes the engine in the havals.

  • How high do you need the spoiler?

    • ask your dad

  • +4

    Would you consider a chopper?

Dont need mine anymore after the 7 eleven 25c fuel discount cap.

    • get to tha choppaaaa!!!

  • +2

Why not put your parameters into the car sales search engine?

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2021-mitsubishi-out…

    • +4

That would make far too much sense, and break the pattern.

      • -1

        look at you smarty pants.

    • I have but I am wanting opinions as well.

      • +1

I dunno if there is much choice with that budget. Just find something that meets the requirements and has been looked after.

  • +2
    1. don't buy diesel if only doing the occasional long trip. do not buy a diesel mazda suv.

    2. toyota kluger or rav4 or honda CRV or mazda cx5 or mazda cx9

    3. full service history

    4. keep up with maintenance and enjoy 8-10+ years of trouble free suv driving

    • +4

      from your previous post

      do you still need:

All I need is a bit of clearance and a 4x4 to pull a camper trailer/van maybe under 3000kg

this will eliminate virtually all SUV suggestions in this thread so far

      • +1

        We have that sorted now.
Although, would be good if we could fit a tow bar and pull a 6x8 trailer but not at all required.

    • Thank you for your suggestions. I will check them out. Are you able to suggest a year? 2018 to date or 2020 to date?

      • +1

honestly probably not going to find anything newer than 2020 within budget particularly with a full service history.
doing a carsales search with those parameters you'll find there's only car newer than 2020.

all toyota models will have higher kms for the year vs mazda or crv. with a complete maintenance history this is probably not an issue.
the CX5s are decent value and probably the nicest to drive. crvs decent too. i will again emphasise do not but a diesel mazda suv

check out redriven on YouTube for more comprehensive info they're really good

Kia Sportage 2019+, Mazda CX-5 2018+, Hyundai SantaFe 2018+ etc.

    • THANKS! I have been looking at so many the Sportage, Sorento and SantaFe keep popping up on my list.

  • +3

Who are you putting in the 3rd row? Do they have legs?

    • 3rd row my dogs

  • Hyundai Tucson, in black soccer mum style 💯

    • +1

      Black soccer mum?

      Kinda racist

      • Waaaaacisttttttt 😂

    • That was the first car I ever bought brand new…but it was a different colour

  • I wouldn't recommend buying a used diesel. Seek out a well-maintained used Honda CRV.

    • what year would you suggest?

  • +6

    AU Falcon on gas.

You don't go off road and you know it.

    • -4

sounds like you are claiming to know me better than myself….how talented.
However you have got this one wrong.

      AU's rubbish

  • Lada Niva. Should be able to get an absolutely mint one within your budget.

    • -3

Unfortunately, your comment has come too soon considering my cousin was conscripted two weeks ago.

    • +5

Aint no one buying a Jeep lil bro

    • not a fan of jeeps…bad experience

  • +3

    Toyota Camry

  • Prius V 2012–2015

  • +1

Could get a nice 2018 diesel Holden Captiva.

    • no thank you
      Thanks for your suggestion though.

    • +1

Good as long as you enjoying repairing or replacing engines and transmissions

      • Don't be like that, they are a quality Aussie vehicle mate.

  • +2

    Toyota Camry

  • +1

Do you want a SUV to use as a 4x4, outback touring , highcountry touring , Kagari (Fraser) island, towing a van etc or do you just want a urban assault vehicle for delivering offsping to school etc .

The sorts of vehicles required are very different. The first group are Landcruiser/Prado/Pajero/Foretuner/Patrol/Grenadier …They are all excellent vehicles for towing, outback touring etc.

For the Urban Assault vehicle for child delivery then there is a plethora of excellent softroaders around that will do the job.. MX9/Rav4 etc etc. You can even get some of them in 2 wheel drive to save money if you neve intend to go off decent roads.

  • I would consider a 2016 to 2018 Grand Cherokee. By 2016, Jeep had ironed out all the bugs. The prices have dropped significantly from the new price of $60,000 to $90,000 range. They are comfortable and have plenty of power. Look for a Laredo or Limited without air suspension (ideally with sun roof options). However, this will require a lot of due diligence to ensure the car has been maintained.

Short city trips and DPF of modern diesel vehicles seems like a recipe for disaster.

Diesel vehicles don't like short trips.

  • An older Lexus RX or NX, Toyota Kluger or Rav4. Same same.
An older Lexus is superior to newer Chinese junk.
Older Lexus are around the same price as their Toyota equivalent but much better equipped.

  • buy a prado then years and kms dont matter. My 2006 has 485,000km and planty of life left.

    • What year would you suggest? I just don't want to be without aircon because they do not stock/make parts for it which is the trouble I am having now with the car I have…

      • +1

Anyone suggeating a prado for $25k for someone who isnt lookong to tow or go off road may also be selling a large bridge in Sydney.

        • Where exactly is this large bridge you speak of? I wish to purchase.

    • Not really a fan of the swing out door.

      • Lamborghini scissor doors are far better, agreed there.

  • You’re going to need a ‘lift’ kit, winch, roof rack, cb radio aerial, ‘big’ mud tyres etc. Then your good to go!🤣🤣

  • Have you looked at 2nd hand Scorpio or Xv700?

    • I don't think they will be suitable.
