Relentless excise increases.
It's great isn't it. We already pay tax on our income but then pay it again when buying stuff.
Despite all the news articles from distilleries and pubs complaining about excise, it's not really the problem. The tax on a 40% 1L bottle went up 70c, which is a lot, but doesn't explain why so many whiskies cost about $20 more a bottle than they did just a couple of years ago. Despite bars saying they have to charge $19 a pint due to excise, the total excise on a pint is about 90c and is up less than 20c over the past decade.
There was also a huge increase in the rebate they get in 2021, it used to be they'd get 60% back on excise paid up to $100k, now it's 100% back up to $350k since 2021.

You can buy a litre of 37% vodka from coles for $47 with CHEERS20 code. They ain't making much on that!

It's sad this is a good price now. Used to be $49 regular price a couple years back
