1 Phase or 3 Phase Ducted Aircon?

My house has a 3 phase supply.

Can I still use a 1 phase ducted aircon? Or do I need to buy a 3 phase aircon?

Appreciate any advice advise

Having 3-phase gives you options. You can still use single phase.

  • You can use a single phase AIR con as the sparky only connects one phase and ground and neutral.
Watch the single phase current draw required as the existing cable depending on the air con size power requirement may cause the cabling to have to be upgraded.

  • Thanks all, another follow up question if I may..

I'm looking at a fujitsu. They sell an optional zone control interface. I'm guessing that I'll need that if I want to have zones? I.e. they do not come with built in zone control?

Yeah, you need a zone controller and a zone motor for each zone you want installed - all of which is additional expense.

From experience it's usually a better option to have multiple split systems installed, in preference to a ducted AC - you get the same flexibility as a zoned system but they are all more efficient and effective - not to mention if one unit dies you still have AC available everywhere else. Upfront cost is also reasonably similar.

Yes and no. You can use either. The 'bigger' units are generally 3phase, if its a smaller unit then single.

3 phase will be more efficient, but either will work. Only get a ducted system if you have decent solar panels (5kw at least). if not, look at govy rebates on split systems at the moment. Splits are more efficient. Ducted is a luxury of being able to turn on the whole house at once…but will cost more (to install and run).
