I have two of these in my travel briefcase. Absolute units - worth every cent in comparison to the cheap shitty Amazon product

    • Yeah, seems like it from all the comments I've read. I was tempted to buy the UGREEN 145w, INIU models but decided I'd try and hold out for a special deal on this before travel later this year… Glad I did.

    • Any middle ground? I just need a 30W PD , 10 to 20Ah (30-70Wh), to top up small laptop & phone sometimes.

      • +1

        https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/374662250087
I recommend this one: 20000mAh and with 45W USB PD, can charge most laptops.

        • Thanks, looks good. Seller closed for CNY though.

        • That was one of the really good earlier models from Xiaomi and if you never multi charge and don't mind the 4-5hr charge time for it then it's certainly a decent option

    • +2

I'm really glad to hear more and more people discovering these and hearing similar sentiments.

For anyone on the edge or unsure, I've got a few personally and have access to more than 10 units between colleagues, family and friends that I have been checking in on every once in a while for the past few years to measure things like cell degradation, thermals, etc and they're still in the top 1-2% of banks I've tested.

While I don't have multiples of most banks I test, the fact that over the years all my testing with a decent sample size and everybody else's input lines up at least tells me they've nailed QC and consistency down.

If youre after quality and longevity, I cannot stress enough that despite this being a few years old, it still wins out over every option at this current sale price (or at a price less than $160)

Just bought one this morning but didn't get the chance to post! Worth mentioning that this powerbank is SmoothCactus approved.

    • I just bought one that smoothcactus talked about from aliexpress for $81..

      • The 100w variant is over $100, how did you get that for that price?

        • +2

I think beach bum purchased this recommendation by Smooth Cactus, which is a generic / no name Aliexpress powerbank that had similar internal cells and performed well enough to be ranked above a plethora of other branded alternatives.

Was tempted to give that powerbank a try due to the price point, but ultimately decided to purchase from Amazon AU for better reliability and service. My recent mini PC purchase from Aliexpress died after a month of use and their customer service was absolute crap.

          • +1

@anonym: The one that was recommended by Cactus was the 100w variant as that's using the 21700 batteries but over $100aud after conversion. The others aren't, so was intrigued on the purchase price.

            • +1

@YellowWiggle: Huh, now you've made me curious too 😂

Might be some kind of first purchase discount for new AliExpress customers?

              • +1

@anonym: Could be a mistaken purchase of the other 22.5w variants instead? 🤷

                • @YellowWiggle: Yes I ffd up and accidentally ordered the 22.5w version .
Got a bit carried away when I saw the price and 50% off and then assumed it was a great deal ,
While not noticing the small print .
Only after reading your comments have I realised and gone back and cancelled my order .
                  Bummer .

                  • +1

@beach bum: Yeah it's an honest mistake I see a lot and I don't think it's entirely your fault.. Honestly even offering the 22.5w version feels a bit iffy, there's little reason to have 21700 cells in a 20w bank.

Almost like they're advertising a product but offering a significantly inferior version..

                    • @SmoothCactus: Yes , that’s pretty much a summary of what I told them to get a refund last night .
No reflection on your recommendation but just typical of that site’s listings , I had forgotten about the alibaba bait and switch even after buying some well priced Sofirn torches recently with decent 21700 batteries and the ability to use as a powerbank .
I think much better value than most dedicated powerbanks and their ‘ features ‘ .

  • +1

Just off a tangent to this, can anyone recommend a good charging brick for this

    • -2

      Heymix

      • +3

Jeez you all downvoted me like I was serious… 😂

        • +1

Possibly because the people looking for advice wouldn't know you were joking and could buy based on your answer.

    • UGREEN or Anker are proven reliable brands that I would recommend, if you are going for affordability.

      • Any ones in particular?

        • GaNPrime is anker's range of small but powerful chargers, if size is a priority for you. Otherwise you can't go wrong with any of them. I picked up a non-GaN PowerPort III Pod to charge my Macbook Air 2023 15" and its perfect for my needs.

      • +1

Sweet, I'm keen to find something as well.

Will look through both brands for one.

      • Many people on reddit don’t recommend ugreen

    • +4

Anything GaN that is able to do 100w and costs more than $40 and has some review history will basically filter out nearly all the questionable or concerning chargers for the most part imo.

Honestly as long as you're staying away from heymix you're probably fine…

Been on look out for one for upcoming travel so thanks OP!

  • How do they fare against the Baseus ones?

    https://www.baseus.com/products/blade-laptop-power-bank-100w…

    • +1

Baseus blade seems to get very hot quite fast and people have mentioned it slows down its charge or discharge when too hot.
I've also had one of the older model Blades fail very early, the blade pro i just bought seems to be doing well though.

This ZMI one I have has lasted me ages with no issues, it's just a lot more bulky. Plus i think the ZMI has a total output power a lot higher than the Blade.

If you're also comparing i'd look at the Anker 737, IMO better than the ZMI just due to its display screen to show you the charging rates and time to empty however it's normally like $169 AUD on special so a bit more.

      • +2

I bought the Anker 737 a couple of months ago and the usb-c ports have already started playing up , not charging etc .
        Don’t recommend .
The one smoothcactus recommended sounds alright a dozen or more posts back , and cheaper , and available , and posts to my address , even if it’s a fortnight away .
        Actually I ordered one .

        • Scratch that
          Cancelled the order
Not as cheap as I thought .

    • I had a writeup about the blade a long time ago somewhere… But the gist of it was that I wouldn't recommend them.

They use flat lipo cells that aren't rated correctly or suitably, this is further validated by the fact that the unit cannot sustain a 100w output without thermal throttling - nowhere is this mentioned and even in reviews you may not find it mentioned.

Particularly for slim/lipo banks dont look at just reviews because they are a snapshot of the product at the time of writing which is usually always shortly after buying it.. But few will discuss things months down the line when problems are likely to arise.. Those that do, discuss huge drops in usable capacity within 6-18months, charging issues and overheating issues in numbers large enough to be quite considerable and unfortunately this also lines up with my own testing.

Basically, I wouldn't advise the Blade in good conscience for most cases because there is a very strong chance that if you even use it moderately then you should expect the capacity to drop, I've seen numbers vary depending on use, environmental temps, etc but it's not crazy to say you might lose 50% capacity in 12 months which will drop with more and more use over time till it's dead.

If it's on a deal that's very cheap, and you're not fussed about lifespan or e-waste, and maybe have very limited use cases that fit making the issues mentioned not significant for you then it could be an option.

      • +1

Thanks for your work, what’s your opinion on the Anker 737 range etc?

  • The special just finished. Had it open with the discount tick box visible while I was doing a bit of reading on it. 5 minutes later it was gone.

  • Can get it for $142.14 Delivered @ Aliexpress

Only downside is estimated mid April delivery

Isn't that the local Chinese version (not as good)?

      • Wouldn't have a clue. Same part number from what I saw but DYOR

      • +2

Yes, there is a difference between the local Chinese version (QB826) and the international version (QB826G).

The international version is superior. Refer to this comment for details.

  • Who gives the best cash back on this?

  • no stick box visible?

  • What is the maximum approved battery capacity in mAh for airlines? Especially the Asian Airlines like Thai or Singapore? If anyone can provide the official information. Thanks

    • 100Wh. (Airlines fortunately understand basic science/engineering, so don't use vague inappropriate units.)
      e.g. 5.5Ah @ 18V.

      • +1

        160Wh* with permission.

  • Purchased mine a few months ago love it however
Couple of days ago it has stopped recharging. No idea if there is a hard reset on these. But will have to return

    • Contact Amazon, they'll replace it or refund if you prefer.

It won't charge with either USB C1 or C2? Does the percentage light blink when plugged in? Did you notice anything prior to it stopping?

There is a low power mode iirc for charging very low current devices but that should not affect charging the bank.

      • Won't charge with any of the USB ports, no blinking when plugged in. Still managed to charge devices with the remaining power it had. Noting out of the ordinary prior to stopping

  • To those who missed it, worth a shot DMing rep @Mostly Melbourne see if he can help out.

    • Do they reply?
I tried DMing them earlier this month to ask if any specials were coming up but I didn't get a response (not that I'm expecting one, it would probably be annoying getting those sorts of messages).

  • Any comments on the imuto 100W 99Wh powerbank which is currently $95 (afterh $25 coupon)?

      $85 with slightly lower capacity

      • I tend to use 10000mAh for daily use and reserve the 20000mAh and larger capacity for trips, so the 26800mAh is worth the extra $10. Arriving tomorrow so we'll see.

  • Do ZMI still make 20000mah power banks? Looking to get a good quality one that's not the cheap (yet high rated/popular) ones on Amazon which seem to have quality issues.

    • +2

ZMI no longer make banks. I'm not sure if these are even still in production or if they're old manufacturing runs.

Either way ZMI were a subsidiary under Xiaomis electronics subdivision till recently when they branched off to make cuktech (or cuktek I think?)

They have smaller size banks (10k and 20k) but aren't the most economical of options but their build quality and QC seems to have remained and they're up there quality wise.

They do use Chinese 21700 cells however they are from a more reputable battery manufacturer that's been around for a few decades. How they stack up to something like LG or Samsung cells I haven't gotten to the bottom of yet.

You'd have to look on aliexpress at them since they are still not available everywhere, their external design philosophy has shifted to be more in line with Anker in terms of shape and size.

      • Thanks for the excellent info. Saw your name pop up yesterday and realised your the power bank expert. Do you have all your research and findings published in a single central place?

Really keen to find a good 20k battery bank with USB C, somewhat affordable, around 20w output for fast mobile phone charging and not too heavy because I'm only using while travelling and will be carrying in a shoulder bag. I see cheap Amazon ones come at around 360g for 20k but Baesus, ZMI, etc come at 460g. Ideally something around 360g is preferred but not worth it if the power bank is less efficient or doesn't hold as much charge, etc. Would you have a list of banks that fit this criteria in mind to aim for?

On a similar note, how would you rate the quality and cells of the brands out there? Would be good to check if I have the correct thinking. Currently, based on the ones I know:

        1. ZMI
        2. Anker
        3. Baesus
        4. INIU / Charmart(?)
        5. Heymix

Would you say that's about right? Are there brands that are so had that you wouldn't even recommend considering? (E.g. INIU onwards)

        Thanks mate

  • +1

    Just had mine delivered.

Please check to see if your retail box seal has been opened and taped over as unfortunately mine was.

Power bank had scratches and was missing any sort of cable accessories.

It was a clearly used PowerBank reboxed and shipped to me and the only option amazon gave me was refund and have it shipped back.

    • Oh darn!

Mine is arriving tomorrow, hopefully new…

I've just had a look on their website. Listing says refurbished and $10 cheaper, Amazon button goes nowhere for me: https://mostlymelbourne.com/products/xiaomi-zmi-no-20-200w-2…

      • +1

Yeah not entirely happy about it. Amazon only offer refunds, not replacements.

        • Really unlucky.

Just got mine - brand new / sealed outer cardboard box and clear plastic sealing the ZMI box.

  • +3

Can't believe I have missed this deal for at least the 6th or 7th time now.

    • +1

Haha, yeah I've kicked myself too. But given the comment above, you might have potentially dodged refurbished ones?

      • Really, have not got around to reading comments yet. Anyhow, as I am mostly on the move in a campervan, my Allpowers R600 is better all round for my needs as I can power my portable fridge in cases where my battery system is out for some reason. I just want one of these as I have not bought many power banks last few years and these are awesome if not one of the best.

  • Just documented the capacity on my ZMI QB826G purchased from MM via Amazon about a month ago at full price. Came sealed.
    Used discharge load 5V 0.5A
13460 mAhr was what I got when the unit shutdown. The rated capacity is 14000 mAhr so didn't quite get there.

Did the same test on the INIU 25000mAhr that was OZB about a month ago, got 15340mAhr

Got a 2 year old 25000mAhr Baseus discharging on the bench ATM. Never documented it's capacity when new. Edit - came in at 7830mAhr

So now in a position to use this as a benchmark to repeat in 6 months.

    • All I have is a USB C cable with a tiny display that shows how much wattage is passing through. The highest number I've seen so far is 91w charging when the ZMI is around 25% full using a 100w GaN charger.

Since the specs claim that it is capable of 100w both in and out, I'm not quite sure if this number is typical? I understand that it is not going to push 100w all the way for the sake of temperature and lifespan, but I would expect it to start charging at 100w and then gradually taper down.

  • +2

One thing that isn't really a deal breaker but worth mentioning is the the flashing light when charging at night.

  • I ordered one for the times when I need to work on-the-go.
Can I ask - if I only plan to use this once every 6 weeks for example, what’s the best way to handle it in terms of power bank health? Let it discharge naturally and then recharge to full a day before I need it, or just always keep it topped up?
