Gas Removal in Victoria (Ausnet) - Avoid Paying Supply Charge?

Hi all,

I'm in the process of converting my unit from gas to electric, and I'm conflicted about how to proceed with the gas removal. I only want to stop paying the supply charge as cheaply as possible, so I was going to pay the $220 + GST for disconnection of the gas meter with AusNet. If I just cancel my gas account with Alinta, and turn the gas meter to off, will that be enough to avoid the daily supply charge? Partner said I can still be billed directly by AusNet for the charge? Ultimately, gas hot water is going away and gas cooktop is too, so the only two gas connections in the house will be capped.

Should I have the meter capped, or is just cancelling my service with Alinta good enough?

Thanks all!

  • I went through this process with Tango (retailer) and Multinet (supplier).

Tango said they could close my account but Multinet may continue to charge for supply even though we had no gas appliances.

Had our gas capped just incase we ever needed it again. Can't recall the cost but it wasn't worth the hassle of worrying about supply bills in the future from the supplier. Only other option was an 'abolishment' where the entire meter was removed.

    • So the gas is capped but meter remains? I think the limit now is $220 + GST but that would surely only include capping? I saw someone else get a 'lock' for ~$110, do any of these prices sound familiar? Thanks :)

    • I went through this with Tango and Multinet, Tango never said anything about Multinet having ongoing charges. Maybe ring back and see what another consultant says. Tango arranged the whole disconnect and final bill for me.

For the actual physical gas connection, I asked my plumber (who does gas disconnects) to cap the supply in my place (cooktop and central heating), and he also capped where the meter feeds the unit (I paid for all of this separate to anything to do with Tango). The meter is still there but not connected to anything.

Just remove the meter and send it back to them…

I did the same with my Foxtel box and haven't been billed since.

Just stop paying your bill - they will cap it off for free.

    • My neighbor did that. He was renting, and in financial trouble. He stopped paying his gas bills. And he had the fences built up because he was growing dope in the shed, so the gas supplier couldn't get in to turn it off, and lock it off, at the meter.

One day I woke up to machinery on the footpath. The gas company had sent a crew with a digger to dig down to the gas pipe and cut it and cap it there.

After he moved out the owner sold up. Boy were the new owners surprised when they found none of the gas appliances worked, and they had to pay for the gas supplier to come and dig up the footpath again, and restore the gas supply.

(If the person stalking me on OzBargain respond to this posting with another one of his nasty replies I will be requesting the mods ban him for harrassment.)

      • Ouch, that would have been expensive..

You may have the answer by now, but if you're on Facebook, join the group "My Efficient Electric Home (MEEH)". Many members on there have done done away with gas. Also, since you're converting to electric, you'll find great info on there for that too.
