Nah, just one AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA battery. They're quite hard to find though.

I can’t tell if that would be really short or really long

  • Thanks OP bought 2 with click and collect.

0.5W is enough power to reach your backyard… maybe.

    • I managed to talk just over 300km on 1 watt which was my best.

        Name does not compute

      • On a handheld UHF? In-credible. Talk to Guiness.

        • I dont know what the record would be, but unfortunately my contact would be nowhere near any sort of record.

@LowRange: For a UHF 1w handheld it probably would be. Even a 5w with an add on extender aerial would be extremely lucky/unlikely to transmit 300km. Apart from the obvious physical obstructions like hills and valleys etc, atmospheric conditions - temp, pressure, humidity and wind - all affect UHF signal transmission. The Earth's a complex system so results may vary from location to location but according to one paper I read ideally you need cool conditions, low pressure and low humidity for optimal transmission.

VHF, al la the old 27mHz "CB" radios, is a 'whole nuther thing' because signals can "bounce off" the ionisphere, esp in late spring early summer. Signals have been known to travel from Australia's east to west coast .

            • @Igaf: When this contact happened it was about 20 years ago towards the end of Summer about 11 o'clock at night. I was on the mid north coast of New South Wales and only around 30 meters above sea level on the coast.

Tropospheric ducting started happening and I was getting the channel 1 repeater in Taree & Newcastle at the same time.

Then maybe 10-15 minutes later I was also getting the channel 1 repeater in Kirrawee Sydney when it had the quack quack Rodger beep on the tail. I managed to talk to a few people there but that repeater is always a madhouse.

And then another 15 minutes later I was getting channel 1 Wollongong, I could still hear Newcastle and Sydney ch1 repeaters but they had faded. Taree was still strong but it was ground wave not ducting.

Two guys I was speaking to on the Woolonging repeater I had drop down to simplex and we still had contact. I switched from my prm8030 to my GME TX 6000 handheld on low power which is one watt and we could still hear each other but only just.

I've experienced ducting like that maybe 30 times over the years on UHF. It actually used to happen to the police radio on 468mhz, and Woolongong would come in on the mid north coast and it would cause big problems.

              • @LowRange: Interestingly, most of the comments I've read over the years about VHF bounce involved people very near the coast, so anecdotally that (might) suggest ideal atmospheric conditions are more likely near the ocean????

We have a similar specced one from Uniden. Been with us more than 10 years. Still works perfectly. Our use case was road trip convoys and it worked perfectly for that. No complaints at all.

    • What’s the range on these ?

      • short. The box claims 3kms. I don't think we've ever used them for further than 1km from each other. I have a feeling they'll extend a little bit further with clear line of sight (but that's just an impression I have). OTOH, inside warehouses and camp grounds, they haven't skipped a beat for us.

      • These are considered LINE OF SIGHT, as more objects block the ariels, the less success and clarity you'll get.

  • RTM have the quad pack on sale for $51.95 so that brings it down to a unit price of 12.99 each.
Looks to be in cool camo colours so might be a better choice depending on your fashion type

    • No link, no postage=no look Why post without the vitals?

My user case is upstairs/downstairs in a brick box with a steel support beam for the upper floor. Will either bypass that steel beam?

      • Yes, it'll be fine.

      • I did put the link in this morning i thought.
Either i didnt or it didnt like me putting the link first.

    • Ahh bet me to do. I ended up getting this pack. Needed 3 anyway so close enough. Plenty of stock of the 4 pack at the Adelaide CBD store.

  • This can connect you to the spirit world

    • Including Dan's?

  • Reckon this can work below 0degC? Need two for skiing

Ive done exactly that with some uniden .5w. Worked fine. Battery performance may differ over extended use i guess.

    • Keep in your insulated pocket.
