Called up to cancel card got offered 180k points to keep it.

Held card for 2 years (300k signup bonus).

Called a week after I noticed the yearly payment show up on my statement.

This is info for people with their renewals coming up.

got offered 180k points to keep it.

Not bad… that's pretty much your annual fee rebated in points.

  • Did you have to actually cancel it and then reinstate/re-apply? Or they just offered when you said you wanted to cancel?

      No cancellation just offered it.

  • Thanks for sharing - can you confirm if you called before your 3rd year started (still on your 2nd year on the card), or after the 3rd year began?

    • This is the third year where I’ve paid fees (first year was sign on bonus).

  • Thanks, useful to know. Any particular words you had to avoid saying (or said)? In the past year or so, the credit reforms have made it a bit of a game to “hint” you wanted to close without saying the “close” word - I think they’re not supposed to entice staying once they’ve heard “close” etc. Sometimes it’s been “I’m reviewing my cards, I haven’t used this one for awhile, any loyal member bonuses” etc. Or perhaps you just got lucky!

All I said is I’m considering cancelling and wanted to know if I’d get my fee back. They asked if I’d made a decision yet and I said no but I’m weighing up the options. Then they offered the loyalty bonus. Beats having to cancel and waiting 18 months before applying again.

      • Thanks. 180k is amazing

  • Thanks. Will try my luck.

    • How did you go? I tried calling and they said they do not offer retention bonuses even though I'm on an Amex Plat card. So basically zero points offered, but I'm on my second year where I got 50k after my annual fee (haven't ticked over to 3rd year plus fees yet).

  • Anyone know what the chances of this happening for other cards would be?

slim to none. It's an Amex thing and even then - mainly for Platinum Charge cards
